| Sparklehorse – It's A Wonderful Life Lyrics

whenever I hear the line "I'm the dog that ate your birthday cake" I always think of an old man smiling watching a home video of himself when he was a kid at his birthday party where a dog ate his cake. and he thinks, "it's a wonderful life."

| Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics

this song is absolutely amazing.....and at the same time, the video is the most depressing thing you will ever see. Johnny Cash took it completely out of its original context when he redid it. (couple of quick facts-his wife died right before he did this song. also, he died just a few months after completing it). this song, in Cash's case, is about Cash looking back on his youth and realizing how little he is without his wife. and he realizes how much he loved his wife. and he realized that he would give anything, absolutely anything, to have her back. (if you don't get depressed by listening to this/watching the video, then either 1. you don't fully understand the meaning behind the song or 2. you don't have a heart) |

| Into the Woods – No One Is Alone Lyrics

oh my god. enough can't be said about this song. Stephen Sondheim has an amazing ability to write lyrics. this song is so influential. you don't have to look to deep in this song to find its message. everyone has someone on their side, even when they think that there is no one that will support them, there is still someone out there that will. "sometimes people leave you/halfway through the wood"-one of the only deep lines in the song. very well connected to real life and the context of "Into the Woods". sometimes people will leave you in some bad situations, but those people don't matter. there is still someone out there who will help you and support you. |

this song is pretty shallow, but its still such a good song. it evokes such strong feelings from the listener, and that is why it is such a good song. the lead singer's mother died from cancer (or something like that. i read it on wikipedia), and this is why he mentions his father in the song and not his mother. the main thing in this programmatic song is that the main character in his past has been through so many relationships, all of which he has broken up, because he is so distraught from his mother's death he can't bring himself to stick with one girl because he doesn't want to feel the same anguish he felt when his mother died. and he wants to break away from this trend, but he just can't bring himself to do it. and we can't help but feel bad for him because he is unable to change himself. (side note-the repeated verse i believe is just the overall meaning for their whole album, hence why it is mentioned repeatedly throughout and why it is the last words that we hear on the CD) |

| Rent – Another Day Lyrics

this song, along with most powerful musical theatre songs, has to be taken out of its context from just "Rent" and brought into the real world. the most influential lyrics, sung by Mimi, are really just amazing. "There is no future/there is no past/i live this moment as my last/there's only this/there's only us/forget regret/or life is yours to miss/no other road/no other way/no day but today" She is saying, to Roger and thus, to us, that you have to live for the moment in life. and if you don't, life will pass you by and you will realize late in your life how much more you could have enjoyed your childhood and your younger years. "no day but today"-really REALLY powerful |
