Lupe Fiasco – Streets On Fire Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay we realize the song is about "The Streets" and her reign. This song is about confusion, the chaos she causes "...and she likes it; and she loves it" I mean its pretty clear that he is talking about AIDS. But he's talking about the affect of confusion, and about how it affects different classes of people. "The rich say the poor are the source" etc. Its about the struggle of the mind, the media's affect on how people think ex. "The boys say it only affects the girls". Even the part when he says "...what happened to all the girls". The girls have become immoral and loose because society tells them its okay to do so. "The Streets" tells a woman it is ok to fuck a man for his money, sleep around and have no self worth or image. And that's basically it. Mostly everyone who posted is right about the song though. Its also about your perspective, and I think that's what Lupe wanted, ultimately.

This song is about the character "The Streets", of course. But I also believe he's talking about AIDS for sure in the first verse.

Nancy Sinatra – Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) Lyrics 17 years ago
"Now he's gone
I don't know why
And 'til this day
Sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie
Bang bang
He shot me down
Bang bang
I hit the ground
Bang bang
That awful sound
Bang bang
My baby shot me down"

This song in essence is about a love that blossomed out of familiarness. The woman in the song loved the man she had grown up with but he didn't have the same love. You can tell that because he says " remember when we used to play bang bang ? " as if he's saying, I love you as my childhood friend; I love the time. I love you for what used to be. And he leaves her without explanation; she didn't forsee that his love for her was simply for the games they used to play. It didn't mature over time as her love for him did. I imagine she may have expressed her feelings to him and just as when they played bang bang when they were young he shot her down. Great and sad song; beautiful. I once felt the very same way....Nancy did a wonderful job of conveying her feelings on this song.

Secondly this is song meanings, not soundtrack/movie analysis. But for the record, I believe Tarantino did make Kill Bill as a mockery. The irony of the story is that Uma Thurmann is the least suspected to survive. And I loved Kill Bill. Part two was better, but the movies are great for their cinematic quality.

First of all this song is being told from the point of view of the artist; so your opinion doesn' treally matter. this is not "howIfeel.net" this is "songmeanings.net" so if you're not explaining the song meaning we don't care about the historical perspective of the situation. it doesn't dictate the meaning behind THIS song. I totally relate to Lupe being a black american and dealing with the opression of society. right on LUPE!

Smfh. Why do ya'll come on here to diss the songs?
It's the art of spoken word which alot of people wouldn't understand; the emphasis put on certain words and the way she's speaking is for a purpose. It is a form of poetic expression. People are so desensitized to art and the meaning behind things from listening to the mind deteriorating rap crap that we hear everyday. I think its beautiful what she's saying...and I don't have a problem with the way she speaks.

Also it would make a lot of sense because Jamaicans have been associated heavily with drug trafficking and things as such. No offense to the Jamaican people.

First of all I'll have to say that there are definately some beligerent idiots on this website; including questforlife with his idiotic ramble about how ignorant people are. Instead of addressing it properly he had to insult the people who may not be as intellectualy inclined as he is; which is a form of ignorance in itself. I would say that his explanation of this song is correct as well. Although I'm not a fan of M.I.A. and saw a contradictory video clip of her on MTV...I'd have to say that this song is heavily infulenced by the jamaican culture and patois. "Gwan" is patois for "whats going on". It is NOT english...It would make alot of sense considering she also is using the term "galang" which someone mentioned up further. Nice work...and remember you don't have to insult a person to prove your point. This is to inform not to belittle.

Lupe Fiasco – He Say She Say Lyrics 17 years ago
He Say She Say is the POV of the majority of households in black americans today.
The boy we see here is the boy who eventually comes to his demise on "The Cool"
Its funny how Lupe has the birth of the character The Cool and his Rebirth on the very same album, "food & liquor" and he revives him again to tell his story on "The Cool".
This is a sad, but true story of what our youth are enduring and what they are faced with in their homes.
I loved this song the first time I heard it...it made me want to cry. And it made me grateful that I wasn't one of the statistics of a single parent household.

I love how this story is told in the same exact words but from two points of view.

Lupe Fiasco – The Coolest Lyrics 17 years ago
The part that appealed to me the most was when he said
"her eyes glowed green with the logo of our dreams"
"the obscene of obsession for the bling..."
That is what I was speaking about when I said "society's standard of what makes a man a man". Its the measure of what you have and not the wealth of your knowledge. Its what is considered "Cool".
I was sad for Michael Young's death in "The Die".
You want so much for him to find the will to come out of his state of oblivious wrecklessness. You want so badly for him to realize...but then we don't recognize that he's so deep in the game that theres no turning back now.
R.I.P. to the many "Michael Young"'s that have died...
"So shed no tear when we're not here, and keep your faith as we chase THE COOL..."

Lupe Fiasco – The Coolest Lyrics 17 years ago
Its so crazy to me how this song is phenomenal in every aspect; from the crazy wordplay to the use of imagery and how deep Lupe goes as far as the context is concerned.

Michael Young is the boy we saw in "He Say She Say" all grown up.

The Streets and The Game are who "raised" him.
In the aspect of his father not being around and being raised in a single parent household, Michael Young in essence is the product and the equivalent to the majority of our young black men today. With nothing but what society views as man hood and the mental oppression by what society sets the standards. What commercial rap says is "Cool".
I love Lupe for this album because it's real. "The Coolest" carries the story in from "Food & Liquor's" songs "The Cool" & "He Say She Say".
I think Lupe IS definately the savior of hip hop. Its sad that he's considering retiring so early on...but his legacy is one no one...no one could replace.
I can't remember seeing or hearing anything that envoked every sense in my body. The emotion...the raw emotion this song carries is breathtaking in itself. Maybe because I'm a woman lol! But this is what Hip Hop is. The story telling is immaculate.
Isn't that what hip hop started off as? A story.

Its obviously the death of the character "Michael Young".
The irony here is that all of "Michael Young"'s secrets (the twin 40's etc...) are actually not so much of a secret. The character plotting to kill him is in full knowledge of everything; his right hand man (I'm not sure if it's "The Streets") is selling Michael candy (this niggas hatin'....) the setup...and the assasination of "The Cool".

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics 17 years ago
Let me say something. 1st and foremost I believe that all of you are analyzing the song way too deeply. It was meant to be viewed at face value. Now all of you make good points about the corruption of the view of "success" in american society; especially in the sense of the youth in our nation. I saw MIA on MTV, discussing what "status" is. She said it was about getting "cheese" and making paper. Lol! Isn't that what she's speaking about in Paper Planes? So apparently, she's lost her damn self.

From what I understand she speaks about political issues? Ok, fine and good but this song is a fine mess. And for all you MIA fans, maybe you should find someone else to idolize. I believe on "Galang" she even made a reference to "purple haze"? Its all a matter of perception, and I think she's lost as well and falling into the same mode of american bullshit that you all are so incorrectly assuming she's against.

Again, my opinion only. Don't like it? Prove me wrong with an intelligent argument that can support why I'm wrong, and proof that she meant otherwise. Until then, I'd have to say she needs to leave gangster rap alone. Rofl! Its definately not a good look for her.
