Man that is a sexy song. ‘I know how you're doing by loonking at your pants’ That is sweet. The girl wants to make love to this guy. She wants to have sex the whole weekend. ‘Wine then bed then more then again, wine then bad then more then again’ Then she is going to kick it off the next day ‘Make me breakfast, I'll make it up’ She is revealing her intentions in the song because when he sees her she will play hard to get. It’s all an act though this guys is going to get what he came for. And she, she’s happy to give it to him. |

Modest Mouse’s song “Steam Engenius” from their album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank deals with existential issues from the point of view of the newly created Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the title we have steam engenius. Steam being the driving force of our first great leap forward — the life blood of the industrial revolution. Engenius to me is the process of engeniating something — giving it the ability to be a genius ‘enough to answer anything you need’. This song is about the technological singularity. This is the point at which technology progresses to a level where it can redesign itself with improvements in each cycle ‘Both halves are the better half’. This also refers to the cellular splitting one of the hallmarks of life. We can also see humans coming to terms with it’s existence. ‘You cheered as I was split in half’. Being delighted with the new progress that this will bring. ‘Birds flew out as I was split in half’ to me the birds symbolize birds of peace. With most of the technological advance man has had; Dynamite, TV and the atomic bomb their original inventors see them as something to herald a new age of peace and love for man. Alas each time human nature kicks in each time. I was thought up by man to think better than them Then revered, admired, and then Destroyed by them [Gibberish] Hell, even all that was my own damn plan The AI is used to kill itself. As the humans have through fear and ignorance grown to hate their new tool. This tool that is in itself useless. Like a rickshaw getting pulled around by another rickshaw Like a joke trying to make another joke laugh Both examples are tools of man progress yet of themselves useless except for the meaning that man gives them. This is the refrain through out the whole song ‘What's the use?’. Well, what a waste of time Waste of words Waste of strength Throughout the whole song we hear the disillusionment of the AI with it’s existence and function as a tool for humans. Doing everything yet still doing nothing. This part is a tricky one; In the past talking present tense Going to break it, going to wreck it Going to try to make it all make sense Is an allusion to some of the complex questions put to it by humans that are dangerous to answer. As dealt with by Ray Kurzweil and the Singularity Is Near. By answering these questions about the nature of reality — like time travel in this case the answers given are too powerful for man to have but not out of the reach of his new tool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Singularity_is_Near Altogether a great song! |

Hey it looks like you got the meaning. I've been looking at some of the other guys and I can't believe how off they are. Yours is shaping up to be quite good. Why are you writing the essay? Is it for college or for fun? I was gonna write this up for fun cos I think it's incredible. I'll post it soon. Parting of the sensory of the same album is great as well. The personification of carbon as it travel through life and decay in an innumerable cycle. |
