I agree that the song puts a certain twist on Christianity -- that it places a new burden on the believer to question if his believes are based in something that have been allowed to grow and be made still relevant. It makes me think of comments by Bill Hicks that our old institutions, including religion, need to be revisited and updated. The need for spiritual connection by way of being loving hasn't changed, but the world around us has done so drastically. I think the song does a nice job of placing those core moral principles of Christianity in a current context. When the narrator marries Jesus' sister he is connecting to a part of Jesus. His fear of Jesus not approving is not based on anything Jesus has ever expressed, but is a symptom of his own mistrust of the world. In a sense, he's marrying her to steal a part of Jesus when all of Jesus is quite obviously available to him. |

I don't think anyone mentioned that Fold's lyrics are kind of reminiscent of Wuthering Heights and, obviously therefore, the Kate Bush song. The window imagery and the daunting depression work well to conjure up the novel and the other song. The song also makes me thing of The Cowboy Junkie song, Horse in the Country, and the line: "...except for Kathy...who bought a one way ticket...and left us all behind." |
