It's Zion songs. I stretched the phrase out over a sequence of slower and slower repetitions and sounded out what I was hearing with the phrase on loop and I realized I was saying Zion. The "D" sound isn't a T on "sweet" that's for some reason tacked on to the start of the word "eye" - it's just hitting the Z in Zion hard enough that it sounds like dZion. Try saying it! Saying it slowly if trying to hit the Z softly you end up saying sZion. If you come at the Z a little harder - come up at it from the throat - you get dZion (or even nZion). But you can't really slow it down - The Z needs to come out at a sufficient pace that the s/d/n sounds slur together and you get Zion. Zion songs. |

I've slowed the passage right down and for the life of me I cannot hear "God's sweet eye of songs". My thoughts ... "sweet eye of songs" doesn't really fit the rest of the lyrics - being the only fairly obvious metaphor in what is otherwise a pretty direct, literal song. There's a gap in the phrasing after what sounds like a soft landing of "sweet" and then he starts singing the next word with something that sounds like a D. So if it is "sweet eye", the phrasing reads like "God's swee/[gap]/teye", which seems unusual considering the absolute vocal mastery on display throughout the rest of the song. Finally, what is said to be "eye of" rolls through three notes, and ends on a soft N sound. Which again, would be very strange if Sam somehow didn't stick the landing on a F sound on the word "of". It sounds very much like "God's sweet dying songs" - but while that seems to fit what is audible, it doesn't make much sense at all. But I also can't accept the "sweet eye of songs" reading which seems to be the only reading circulating anywhere online. So I rather think the line is "God's sweet [?] songs" eye IN songs? Any ideas? |

I've slowed it down, filtered out high and low frequencies ... Those words are good and buried! But then the fellow's live MO is to encourage audience participation, so why shouldn't we have to go digging a little bit to satisfy our curiousity about the tune? I have to concur with the posts that say he's still got his *shape* but not for long. And after "and oh" it sounds to me like "In the rain" rather than "It rained" And I can't help hearing the "and oh" as "hernd all" ... I've seen guesses "her dog" and "heard all" ... and I don't find that it sounds much like either, either. Then, in the second "verse", the second "I know" almost sounds different, more like "right now". As far as "Life is in our own" is concerned - even having tried to digitally isolate what he's saying there, I don't think it's really discernible. I wonder if what is heard as the "own" isn't actually something about the "road" we might already be talking about? I suppose the next step would be trying to figure it out contextually. The song is certainly a standout, but what is its place in the album? But I'm not prepared to have that discussion yet, so I'll sign out on that note. |

| So I slowed the 2nd verse down to try and make sense of it. He's definitely not talking about science. He says Signs ... which makes sense in the context of examining the meanings of mystical passages. He just stretches it out, singing it like "sigh-eens", which does sound like science. | About the "uncover your eyes / they're bloodied enough" line listed above, if anyone gets to reading this, let me know if you think it sounds more like "bloody in love" or some such ... listen closely ... i don't think I can make out anything like "enough" or any eff sound. | |

QUESTION: I'm still not sure - but to be picky, is it: HE'S not an intimate secretary; or IT'S not an intimate secretary ... Not that rock singing tends to decent diction, but I'm not hearing any 'huh' in there ... NOTE: Well, it's finally refreshing to find a site that recognizes the *obvious* "Venerable obscurist malarkey" line. With Craig's keen input I've submitted an updated version on the lyrics correction thread, so hopefully that gets up soon. |
