I like the song well enough but I don't get the whole point of everyone who is in Reggae having a Jamaican accent when they aren't Jamaican. Sting did this too (even if it wasn't nearly as bad). Maybe it's just because he's speaking Patois. |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone Lyrics

If gardenhead is about drugs, why is it connected to "leave me alone"? They could have appended this to heroin bag if they just wanted to make it longer.
I read somewhere, it might've been earlier in these very comments, that the "gardenhead" was a guy that would watch them play and when he was invited in he left and they never seen him again. Maybe it's about burning bridges? Many of those things do resonate with me when I think back to people I haven't seen in a long time. Like you're a ghost that's observing someone else's life, someone that no longer exists. But I don't see many drug references. |

Alot of this seems to be about harsh decisions. The trail of a thousand tears, the watership down references. And then there is a "ghost" in her, a phantom or specter, something incorporeal and nagging but not real. Wanting her to make it all better when she thinks there is nothing she has done wrong.
To me it sounds like she's struggling with the self. |

This is one of those songs that's far easier to get than it is to explain. Anarchists describe the state this way, as socialists describe the free market and secular humanists describe religion. And the Laizzez Faire capitalists describe socialism. And the anomist describes all social context. |

I remember hearing that this is actually stitched together pieces from 4 other poems Serj wrote. So it might have many partial meanings but nothing concrete. Which might in itself be the meaning. |

The media has lots of stories, some are manipulative in the lack of information they give. You ask why but people'd rather have their pretty fireworks than think about anything. So they just take what's said for granted and ooo and awww at the fireworks. or the weird images (seen a youtube poop lately?). But you know all songs are either songs about relationships, how people are sad or the Iraq war. So I'm probably just stupid. |

I think this is a very deconstructionist song about the industrial revolution and it's leading up to modern consumerism. Somewhat reminiscent of a cross between Goethe and Daniel Quinn with a very absurdist style. |

Sounds like she "kicked the dog" and feels bad about it but felt she did the right thing. The "Ghost" part of it could be a reference to Max Stirner. Especially how it's used that the "ghost" want's to apologize while she (the self or ego) thinks she is in the right. |

It sounds to me like someone is feeling extremely trapped within their own life. But everything seems to point to it being their fault and any "escape" would be an illusion because they're the ones trapping themselves. |
