| Rammstein – Du Hast Lyrics | 15 years ago |

To clear all the misunderstandings: The pronunciation of du hast (you have) and du hasst (you hate) are basically the same. Additionally, there's a grammatical twist: The line 'Du hast mich' can both mean 'You possess me' or the discontinued part 'You have ... (me)' without the verb, as in 'You have -asked- me' (Du hast mich gefragt) The word-to-word translation is 'You have me (asked)' so this expression is only valid in German due to the different position of pronouns. This way, you can see it as constantly adding a word till you reach the full sentence: Du Du has(s)t Du has(s)t mich Du hast mich gefragt Doing this in correct english, it would lead to: You You have You have asked You have asked me As you can see, the english meaning in the 3rd and 4th line stay the same, while the meaning of 'Du has(s)t mich' can differ completely from the last line. So there's 3 takes on the 3rd line: You hate me, You possess me or You have asked as a discontinued sentence. Note: 4th line HAS to be 'Du hast mich gefragt' - hassen (hate) is invalid here. |

Funnily enough, it's always the people preaching about how a song is 'bad', 'overrated' or whatever degrading adjective you can think of that tend to talk about pretentiousness. I couldn't care less if it's a monkey drumming without any knowledge whatsoever or a commonly acclaimed musician that's studied music theory and has been engaged in the business for 20 years as long as I get enjoyment out of these songs. It seems some people need to get over their objectivity complex. |

As be*low, so a*bove and be*yond I i*ma*gine | 13 Drawn be*yond the lines of rea*son | 8 Push the en*ve*lope | 5 Watch it bend | 3 Yep, it goes on like this in the whole song... I'll read all 19 pages later, but now I'm quite in a hurry, so I'll just state what the Fibonacci-sequence represents imo: The Fibonacci can be interpreted as an outgoing spiral, never ending, and that's what this song is pretty much about: Keep developing your thoughts and never stop at any point of thinking, because you can still improve your view on the situation. Being open minded for "new" things, thinking outside of the box so you can reach a "higher" level of conscience. The very first 2 sentences can be seen in this way as well: His way of judging the situation develops from a "black and white"-view and gets new aspects. I think it's a very spiritual song, both in lyrics and the instrumental structure and still one of my favorites of this band. But I wouldn't call this my #1 song, because my hearth would bleed if I had to choose a very favorite. The albums themselves are masterworks. :) |

I'll have to agree, the German language can sound pretty "angry" and harsh to people who are used to "softer" languages. (The opposite would be Message to Harry Manback I+II - it doesn't sound this "evil", even though the content is really insulting) I guess that's one of the reasons why "Rammstein" are REALLY popular in other countries than in Germany, they're actually "playing" with this aspect of the german language and the prejudice that the attributes of a typical german are being harsh etc. ;) |

Some people should actually realize, that a song can have hundreds of different meanings for different people, so stop pretending to "know" what a song is actually about, hell, an underaged person could even think this is about... whatever, accidentally hurting yourself in the kitchen or whatever. So start respecting the opinion of other peoples, every interpretation can be a true one, when the person feels that it fits to his situation. |

Man, can't you just stop argueing about "who wrote the song", use your brain and google it yourself? I'm sick of ignorant people giving a comment onto everything without even looking up the slightest information about the topic. For further information just read through hurlbag's post. On the topic: It's true, TDS is about the breakdown of a person's life and - in the end - strongly about the suicide topic, but "Hurt" can have several other meanings like regretting decisions you made in life and can't undo (which Johnny resembles the most in his cover, imo), drug addiction, the act of hurting yourself through cutting to endure strong psychical pain because you can't sustain it etc. This song is really a masterpiece, because it can have different meanings to a person, depending on his situation and feelings, and still expresses all the pain people are feeling in such a situation. And no, I don't prefer either this or NIN's version, for me, NIN are really a great and visionary band, but I can't help myself but respect Johnny for this great cover, the versions are way too different to simply compare them and have their own - different - feeling. |
