| Mike Doughty – Unsingable Name Lyrics

Mike Doughty talks about this in his memoir The Book of Drugs:
A girl with an unsingable name sent me an e-mail out of the blue, saying she was on a high school field hockey team with the assistant of a woman who worked at a music magazine, and that she loved my music. Her name was a melodious string of vowels. Just looking at the e-mail, I decided that a girl with that name just be beautiful.
The book never says what her name was, but they got involved in a several-month relationship based on heroin and self-loathing.
Incidentally, he talks about the "$300 worth of dope I was sniffing daily." Probably the inspiration for his song $300. |

Plus Karen Carpenter was anorexic, so she was definitely obsessed with her appearance and looking good, and it eventually killed her. |

"When God gave us mirrors He had no idea"
I think that line is about our obsession with appearance and looking good to other people. Like, we were fine when we didn't know what we looked like, but once we had mirrors we became obsessed. Also, this song is more about inner beauty than outer beauty. Or at least hidden beauty. |

"I'm amazed" no one has commented on this song yet. Terrific song off their latest album. Pretty simple lyrics but the harmony lines and lead guitar hook really drive it forward. |

My favorite Ludo song. It shows how a creative person can plumb the depths of their imagination when first infatuated with somebody. It's almost a free-association type thing - from pirates to Mayan temples to Mexico to droids in outer space... Always makes me smile. |
