I thought this was about the alpha couple on my first listen as well, especially with the preference for harder liquors. However, if you really listen to it you can tell it's not them. The alpha couple never had much money; in the song "Southwood Plantation Road," the alpha male claims he's spending a lot of money when he's buying his wife white gold. That doesn't seem like the kind of remark that would come from someone who buys jewels and Italian race cars for his wife. |

This song sort of feels like it was written about the Alpha Couple. Despite the fact that I've always assumed Tallahassee was Darnielle's way of putting an end to the Alpha Couple, and the title's lack of an "alpha" prefix, the overall mood of the song fits. The desperation, the recklessness, the passion, and the line "Now you say you love me/Pretty soon you won't," all give me that impression. Plus... this could really be grasping at straws, but one of the songs on the See America Right single (can't remember the name at the moment) describes the Alpha Female wearing fishnets as they buy a new car. I'm not sure. Any thoughts? |
