I think this song is about the narrator being in a relationship, then the other person dies "bury me beside you". The pain of the loneliness prompts the narrator to want to forget about the relationship entirely. It's the inverse of the saying, "It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." The narrator clearly feels that this is not true. |

Personally, knowing Maynard's dislike of organized religion, this song seems to tie in very closely with the Catholic Crusades; in that murder is considered a sin, but during those holy wars, killing the 'infidels' was basically a 'Go to Heaven free' ticket, to quote my European History teacher.
I think the idea that this song has everything to do with religion is very obvious in the first stanza: 'So glad to see you well/Overcome and completely silent now/With heaven's help/You cast your demons out'
The second part of the stanza: 'And not to pull your halo down/Around your neck and tug you off your cloud/But I'm more than just a little curious/How you're planning to go about/Making your amends to the dead/To the dead' This part seems a little sarcastic, as if the speaker is asking, 'Are you even sorry for what you did?' It's almost patronizing, like a parent scolding a child for something they've done wrong.
In this song, the subject seems to have adopted a holier-than-thou attitude with the line 'And not to pull your halo down/Around your neck and tug you off your cloud' which could show that the speaker considers the subject to believe himself all high and mighty.
It's so easy for the subject to transplant his own deeds onto someone else: 'Recall the deeds as if/They're all someone else'/Atrocious stories' This could be a reference to warriors telling old war stories.
The whole idea of the noose being the halo could easily be turned around into the halo is the noose. Basically, you're hanging yourself on religion. The idea seems to be that religion came after the misdeed, but that could easily be turned into the misdeed was performed as a direct result of the religion, just like the Crusades. If you really think about it, all of society's morals, no matter the culture, comes from whatever religion is most prevalent in the area, not the other way around. So it makes perfect sense that whatever it is the subject did to make the speaker want them to 'make amends' was done because of religion, and that religion justifies the actions. |

What album is this song on? I have Dreamland, 23 A.M. and Organik, but it's not on any of those; I thought those were the only three he had out. Is there another one? |

I don't think it's an anti-war song at all. I think it's more along the lines of - and I'm a writer, so I can't help but create a story when I hear a beautiful song like this - of two people, one is in love with the other (just my view) and the other person, the one whom the song is about, is talking, namely about things that are dangerous to those in authority. So the authoritive figures are trying to silence this person, and the narrator wants this other person to be quiet, to stop talking so he'll be safe. By the end of the song, the narrator has changed his mind, and is telling this other person to never let those in authority stop him from speaking, 'don't let them silence you'.
5ii, yeah, Maynard's son does play cello in this song. I think it's absolutely beautiful. |

I think puscifer's crudeness is just MJK laughing at us. He's got such a weird sense of humor... I think it amuses him to make people uncomfortable, hense the crass, rude humor. It's our discomfort that he finds amusing, not the actual 'humor'. And, true to MJK style, a few of the songs i've listened to, while being far less cryptic than Tool's typical M.O., still have some significance. And i can't wait for the next Tool album to come out - i'm willing to wait. :) |

5ii, i applaud your efforts and you got a heck a lot more of the lyrics right than I did, but i think in some places, you're wrong.
I think it's 'we're sucking the life from a hole in the world'
and 'i wish you could see me for something more' rather than 'i wish you could see and leave for something more'. I think it makes more sense with the next line 'than the things i'm confined and condemned to be'.
And i think the last line in the second to last stanza should be 'so that we may see some light.' |

Sorry if i'm repeating something someone's already said, cuz i don't have the patience to read through eighteen pages of discussion, but i am SUCH a bad Tool fan! I just realized that Lateralus, Disposition, and Reflection go through a person's life cycle. They're meant to go together and i just realized in what way... I've only had this album for a little while, though, so don't hurt me! |

I don't understand why Billy Howerdel didn't sing in APC, he has such a beautiful voice... Gorgeous, but very different than MJK. |
