Agreed - it's brilliant. I agree with Cool4Cats on it being about exploitation - especially exploitation that comes in the guise of "something good for you", like protection or civilization. The image I always got from it was of a British woman living in a British colony (at some point in history). Her people are supposedly bringing better civilization and better religion and better ways of living to the local "savages", but in reality it's the colonials who are the savages. The lines about her guns and furs reminds me of British settlers hunting animals just for skins and furs, when the local "savages" would never have been so wasteful, for example. "All violence is cheap" - means, no matter how you dress it up, exploitation is as "savage" as it gets. |

"Payne County" is in Oklahoma, and to me this song has a vibe of a lawman chasing down a criminal. So I searched for outlaws associated with Payne County and found the story of Bill Doolin and his gang of bank robbers fleeing that area and being hunted down and killed by a posse of lawmen: http://www.doncollier.com/historic12.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ingalls I don't know if that's what the band had in mind, but it's an interesting interpretation in any case. |

| The Veils – Lavinia Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I'm with Mel Azavedo - I think there's a killing vibe to this song. However, I think he's planning to kill himself because even though he really loves Lavinia, he can't get past the death of his lover Lucia, and is hoping to be reunited with her in death. I hear the lyrics just a little bit differently than what they have up here: See my love asleep on the floor In a pose that's familiar *See, my son, we'll send you to war *If the battle don't kill you But I've a change in mind *She's calling all the time That I don't want to live in your side Though the rose is vermillion And I'd find it so hard to survive Without when within you My sweet Lavinia My sweet Lavinia All the years buried under the floors And the wounds in the parlour Would have come up to greet us before If it weren't for my heart because *I've her name in mind And it's calling all the time For my sweet lavinia Lucia my love, in the darkness shine Lucia my love, and you're not mine Lucia my love, in silence so long Lucia my love, no promise no more, Lucia, I walk this unknown My Lucia my lover my own Lucia, my love, i leave here soon Lucia, my love, my life's over when i come home Lucia, Lucia, Lucia, Lucia... two three four |

| Cutting Crew – (I Just) Died in Your Arms Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I can't see a prostitute having a diary on her bedside table for the clients to peek at, so my interpretation is that she's married - and he may be involved with someone, too. "Broken hearts lie all around me" - that's everyone who stands to get hurt by this relationship aside from the singer. "Try to be discreet" - works for affairs as well as seeing prostitutes. "Loving by proxy" could mean an absent husband she tries to replace with a string of lovers. And in the end, he feels both used and guilty. | |
