this song has nothing to do with DRUGS, idiots. give tom petty a little more credit than having this great song be about something as simple as drugs. petty's lyrics are deeper than that. however, it seems as though most of you aren't smart enough to figure it out. you are all so simple minded so you say "hmm i think its about drugs cause im a moron and thats a simple explanation. and it makes me sound smart. therefore, i dont have to think too much." this makes me realize that most people probably dont really appreciate/understand just how good his music/lyrics really are. or atleast 90% of the people that comment on here. if any of you are real fans and read tom petty books (documentaries) you would know that it is about being a young male and starting off on a journey by yourself for the first time. leaving the place you have lived your whole life for the first time and not knowing what to expect. learning to live on your own. be completely independent for the first time. good work on the drug idea though guys. way to think the song through. hahaha. |

i think this song is about a group of friends. these friends had it great in their younger years but didnt realize it at the time. they always talked about their great ideas for the future and where they wanted to be in their lives. and all the great things they wanted to do. as time went on they kept talking about the future but never did anything about it. once they got there (the future) they started noticing it was kinda too late to do all the things they talked about as teens. so all they talked about was all the great times they had in the past. and how they wish it was like old times again. (however, at the time they werent truely enjoying because they kept looking towards the future). so its kind of like they never lived in the now (present). always living in the future and in the passed. dreamers in their younger years. then live with regret in their later years. so they start making excuses to lean on. (ie. the pillar) they had the tools to do everything they talked about doing. but never took the time to develop the skills to set forth those plans. "everyones unhappy. everyones ashamed" the future was there for them. and it could have been what they wanted it to be but "we didnt read the invite, we just danced at our own wake" beautiful song. one of my all time favorites. |

Can you still hear the last goodnight? reminds me of my teenage years being in love with this girl i hung out with in my group friends. just the butterflies i would get from being around her. i never told her how i felt until right before we left for college. she felt the same way, but i told her too late. |

amazing song. this song has so much emotion behind it. "tonight i lack the strength to even move when you walked, now watch me die" he just got done telling her that its over. watching her walk away, knowing it broke her heart, hurt him so much he just felt like dying. beautiful song. |
