Just to comment on the oddity of the phone number that he uses at the beginning of the song: "143" is used to mean "I love you," as the numbers of letters in each word corresponds to the numbers: I=1 letter love=4 letters you=3 letters and then "1437" can mean "I love you forever" (forever=7 letters) and "310" is the area code of cities in LA County One of the reasons I thought about the numbers meaning I love you is because Musiq Soulchild has a song called "143" and I looked it up and thats what it stands for If you haven't heard this whole album... I agree with KVC, it is pretty tight, from beginning to end.. Graffiti on the other hand... |

| Nickel Creek – The Hand Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |

It amazes me how people want to hide from the fact that this song has Jesus Christ and His love and sacrifice written all over it. I believe that the thorn that the boy got from picking the rose symbolizes the nails in Jesus' hands on the cross. The boy in the story wants to give something to his mother to show how much he loves her. But in his action of picking her the rose, he gets his hand pricked by a thorn. When his mother sees what has happened, she sees the love in what he did and even more so because he got hurt while trying to show his love for her. Then later when the mother is reading him the bible, he sees the picture of Jesus and innocently points out the parallel between what he did and what Jesus did("mama he's got some scars just like me!"). Jesus showed his love for us to the point of getting nailed to a cross and crucified, so that we could have a right relationship with God. |

| I very much agree with a lot of the comments made about this song. And I also must agree with the person who said that they are glad that there are musicians that are able to write songs that express what people feel. I have just recently come across this song, yet I think it is pretty much a description of me and my journey with faith. I can relate so well with those great feelings of doubt, yet still knowing that God's word is the Truth, and the He really is there and accepts me even tho I doubt his very existence sometimes. All I can say (other than what I just said :-) is wow. Great job Nickel Creek. | |
| Nickel Creek – Reasons Why Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think that people can have their own interpretations of a song, but I have to say that I feel that this is pretty obviously a song about the writer's falling away from their relationship with God: -"I don't remember one jump or one leap, just quiet steps away from your lead" and their confession that they know that it hurts them when they do: -"and knowing how hard it hurts when we fall" yet they still continue to look for other things to fulfill them instead of God: -"we lean another ladder against the wrong wall" Its also interesting that as they pursue those things that they know aren't leading them towards God, they finally reach a point where they realize what they've done and are angry at themselves and possibly God that they've let it go that far: -"and climb high to the highest rung, to shake fists at the sky" The writer talks about "The Reasons Why" they turn away the justifications they make in their mind for wandering away from God: -"Others have excuses, I have my reasons why" One being the lies that we hear from society about living for ourselves, and this life, instead of for God, and the next life: -"With so much deception, its hard not to wander away" I love how Nickel Creek subtly ties their spiritual beliefs into their songs to give them a deeper meaning. This is one beautiful example, both lyrically and melodically, of that. |
