| Crash Test Dummies – Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
In my view this song is about something being revealed about someone, their explanation for it and how the song singer does not buy the explanation given. The first child through his explanation would want us to believe his hair turned white from the shocck of the accident. Which makes his story very sensational but the song singer thinks the guy just dyed his hair so as to have a new image maybe to detract attention away from the accident or its impact on the guy himself. The second child,(I always thought he said burnt marks as opposed to birthmarks) would like us to believe the marks are birthmarks. The son singer does not ,he probably thinks they are burnt marks either self inflicted or caused by another person(abuse). These two children most likely caused their own demise and are therefore luckier than the last child whose demise is dependent upon people he has no contol over: his parents. He cannot explain why his parents shook and lurched all over the church floor. It smacks of demon possession to me.He wants us to believe that he cannot explain why they did that but it seems pretty obvious. He is worse off in that aspect and also because he cannot (like the other two children) even give an excuse for his parents behaviour coz there is nothing else like it.He cannot hide behind an excuse( no matter how implausible) like the other two can. |

| George Michael – Careless Whisper Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The song narrator has a secret which his friend has shared with him . The dancing may be a metaphor for sex but I cannot be sure. Then one day he “spills the beans” –the careless whisper. Now when they are together involved in a pastime they have shared for long(the dancing) the friend can see by how the narrator is doing the “dancing” that he is the source of the careless whisper. Now they will never “dance” again together and even if they do the narrator cannot dance freely as before as he knows the careless whispwer prevents him from “dancing” in as unaffected manner as before , when he had not done the careless whisper. | |

| Level 42 – Something About You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it is about a couple who are still together. They may have grown apart ,gone thru ups and downs and the years have changed them but he still find there is something about her that keeps him in the relationship.Something about her that despite all the wrongs is right. | |
| Cyndi Lauper – All Through The Night Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Agreed. I think it ia about how the night is so good you don't want it to end coz there is so much you can doi that you cannot in the day.Mainly coz people can see you and there are spots open at night that are closed by or uninteresting by day. | |
| David Mead – Girl On The Roof Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Song is about a girl who is the roof about to commit suicide. She is thinking about it , but delaying hence forth waving goodbye, making the crowd belo wonder if she will do it. The song narrator is wondering whether she is doing it to gain attention or for proof from the person who loves her that he really does and thus will rescue her from the suicide (attempt). My guess is she really does not want to end her life. Also song narrator cannot believe what she wants to do as he himself is in love (love is in the air) and he cannot understand the senseless act she is about toi commit. He would not do it coz he is in love or else he is in love with her. | |
| John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
If anything John is highlighting the plight of daughters who grow up without fathers. Not all of them will face problems but the one about whom he sings sure did. Also he says mothers be good to your daughters too. He also highlights their importance in the thing. I think he is talking to fathers particularly be cause he himself is male and has maybe in his life seen too many women broken because of fathers who leave. So this is his heart wrenching plea to them. |

boys you can break find out how much they can take boys will be strong and boys soldier on but boys would be gone without warmth of a woman's good good heart This I believe is what is dividing the people on this string. I for one think that what John says when he says boys are strong and so forth is not so much that they are but that they behave as expected ie putting a front of strength etc but without the love of their mothers they would be gone. Now gone here to me means so many things ..could be emotionally unavaiable men, leave home, lost members of society. If anything this verse shows the interdependence between the sexes in a family unit. And becoz mothers are normally the nurturers it means in order for a girl to become a woman who is a nurturer she needs to have a loving father and in turn in order for a boy to become a man with heart he needs a loving mother.See interdependence. Now before anyone says but I never had a mother or a father or both, well which ever older man or woman is in one's life. As for single parent families I am sure the meaning could extend to older other sex relative who was an influence when growing up. |

| Supertramp – The Logical Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I always thought it referred to a person living in the 60's.How when in childhood the world is such a carefree place and thinking is uncontrolled(magical) Then the person gets sent to boarding school(military school maybe) where conformity rules and free thinking is no longer an option. One is taught how to be, ho to be, what to think. This status quo troubles the narrator, late at night when they are reflectingupon their life and the meaning thereof. Now later on in verse two the narrator is now at college where they are free to think because they are not in boarding school anymore. "Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal." That line refers to me the way students who rioted or demonstrated against the gov. were seen as radical, liberal etc The sign up your name bit to me seems like the signing up toi go to Vietnam becoz it would show support for the gov. ideas still he is looking for someone to tell him who he is becoz of he's experiences he does not trust his own judgement of who he is anymore. Further proof that becoz he has been such a follower he has indeed become a vegetable in his thinking. |

| Steve Winwood – Arc Of A Diver Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Three things : the night, music and steve Song narrator has music he dreams about as he longs to be a musician but everytime he awakes the music is gone. He allows this to happen becoz he is afriad to be a musician(but one who plays a certsin type of music) It is only by diving into the music that he can fully express his love for music instead of focussing on the fear he feels about it. |

| George Michael – Hand to Mouth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
As for verse 5 could be the baby has become an overbearing overweight person living with a man who is older than her. She is not free to make her own decisions regarding money (she asked her daddy and her daddy said yes). She gives a little(drugs) in exchange for a lower monetary value than they are worth. Generally the people are experiencing pverty not only in moetaary terms in terms of freedom, time, choice etc. |

| George Michael – Hand to Mouth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
1st verse poor guy has nothing so kills a bunch of people to become someone but he just becomes a poor person in jail. A hooker cannot afford to keep her baby coz she is afraid the baby will be like herself so she leaves the baby at a rich person' s doorstep so they can give the child a better life than she is living as a hooker. It seems her way of life then leads to her death. This verse ties to the 5th verse. 3rd verse is like the way people generally glorify USA but the narrator of the song followed the dream to live there only to find that those he glorified were empty in terms of their beliefs(maybe having no character) because he thought he would become rich but stayed poor while there. Also he believes himself invisible to the gods who "led" him to go there in the first place as he has failed to attain the promised dream. 4h verse focus on new generation to the exclusion of the people who really need the help. And that new generation is the one that continues to alienate the poor no matter how much they cry out for help.It seems the poor are not only poor in monetary terms but time as well. 5th verse the little baby that was left on the doorstep is now a big white lady (big meaning older to contrast the little (younger ) baby she was in the 3rd verse). The guy (daddy to whom she refers to in the song is actually her sugar daddy) pimps her out. He gets her to feel like its something she has to do for the good of the family( the they referred to in the verse). Family could be a crime family or a whole bunch of other people involved in the trade. Which is ironic as her mother’s intention for leaving her on the doorstep was so she would not become a hooker. I think in this case the girl is a high class hooker but she doesnot believe the lies the “family’ tell about the reasons why she should be okay being a hooker( somebody shouted maybe) Which ties in with the 6th verse where she goes to America thinking she can escape the kind of life she is leading only to becomea high class prostitute to the people holding high positions in the USA.(hence she kisses the powers that be) I would not say the song has Anti American sentiment . It just highlights the ironies and sad plights of some people who reach for the dream from inside and outside America’s borders only to have their experience there fall short of their expectations. |
