"But I hated him, and I hated you when you went away." ...from the first time I listened to it, I always assumed the character tearing them apart was Terry's father. Did anyone else get that feeling? It only occurred to me later that most people would probably assume it was another man. I agree that Terry could be a guy... I think that's what I like so much about the song. Guy or girl, love or just strong and (maybe a little confused) friendship? Springsteen is usually kind of specific about who his characters are, and what their relationships are.
