Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 13 years ago
Like some who have posted here, I think that this song is about mental illness. The whole cadence of it, is that of a conversation between two people that love each other, one who is mentally ill and one who is taking care of the other. The female part is constantly negative and the male voice that is constantly reassuring her.
The old and empty house is them together, isolated because her disease is so troubling and he's the only one there to support her. She's paranoid and depressed hearing the worse in the house around her and he's reassuring her that she's safe, putting a happier spin on the noises to comfort her. She's become so ill that she can't even take care of herself some days and it hurts him to see her like that.
The old voice inside her head is the person that she used to be when she was healthy and he misses her. They used to be happy together, but all she can see is how close the end of their relationship is. She's sees the bad and he tries to lead her back to the good. Lots of little things speak to mental illness... "Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear." "Don't listen to the words I say - the screams all sound the same." She's saying I'm not rational right now and I don't mean what I am saying so you can't listen to it.

The saddest part is the duet portion - "You're gone, gone, gone away. I watched you disappear..." This is true for both of them. He's watched her slowly lose herself and she's watched her sickness and his constant care and worry for her wear him down so he's not who he used to be either. Neither one of them wants to burden the other, but neither one wants to let go of the other either. The entire song has the emotion of him comforting her, but the entire situation dragging them both down. They can't fix it, they can't let go, they can't break up and they can't break even.

The chorus is saying no matter what perspective they are looking at the truth from, sane or insane, they will be together and they their love will see them through this horrible trial, even if it ends badly. Their ship will carry them home.

@teajenny

I think when he said another man, he meant in additional to himself (Billy Brown) - as in instead of falling in love with a person of the opposite sex, he fell in love with someone of his own sex - ANOTHER man.

@Thatsnotaleaf and a few others - Hell is a common nickname for Helen, Helena, and pretty much any name that starts with a Hel- or even sometimes an El prefix. If you want a more figurative explanation "They call me Hell" could mean that they think she's trouble, as in "She's hell to deal with".

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song is about one of those people who both hide from happiness and still keep talking about when their ship is going to come in and how good their life is going to be someday - all while sabotaging any chance for real happiness. Every time something good happens to them or could happen to them they avoid it, break it, poison it or run away from it. "Happiness hit her like a train on a track/ Coming towards her stuck still no turning back/ She hid around corners and she hid under beds" If something comes along and makes you happy, losing it could break your heart, so it's better to be not be happy and never be in pain. Instead of just taking advantage of it and enjoying, they smother it while they have it and drive it away "She killed it with kisses and from it she fled", or they become so toxic and self-destructive with something like alcohol that they can't feel anything at all "With every bubble she sank with her drink/And washed it away down the kitchen sink"

A person like that tells themselves that they can't survive that sort of heartbreak, usually because it happened to someone they loved. They saw how badly that person was hurt and how they couldn't love the people around them because they were so damaged. They don't want to be the person that bails out on their family because they took a risk and it failed, so they use all of the people that they care for as excuses not to feel. "Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father/Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers/ Leave all your love and your longing behind/You cant carry it with you if you want to survive."

Every time something good comes, they run away from it, until they are at the end of their life looking at all of the choices they had and become bitter and sad. Pretty soon, they poison everyone around them, even the people that love them the most, and if they don't learn to cherish what's around them, they finally lose it all. It's not their fault, though, it's everyone else's problem because they don't understand what's never be said. They don't understand that other people can't make you happy if you can't be happy with yourself.they pin all their hopes on the people around them, instead of looking inside themselves for the problem. "And I never wanted anything from you/ Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh/ Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head/ Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that" They talk about how everything's going to get better, how they're finally going to get lucky or they're finally going to get everything they wish for, sort of like an endless cycle that they can never get off of. "The dog days are over/ The dog days are done/ The horses are coming/ So you better run.

Sorry, mine was completely depressing, too.

The Ting Tings – That's Not My Name Lyrics 16 years ago
The artist said that this song was based on her experiences in the record industry, but I think all good songs have another interpretation, so here's mine (mind you, I'm a former geek)

"I'm the last chick standing up against the wall/ Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring/ Getting clamped up and sitting on the fence now/.../Although I'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name"

I think that this song is about a girl who is kind of a wallflower. She goes out with her friends but can't really relate to people that she doesn't know. She gets all dressed up to go out but can't close the deal with guys because she's nervous.

"Holding back, everyday the same/ Don't wanna be a loner/ Listen to me, oh no/I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name"

She wants to be different but everytime she meets up with someone new, she just can't get anything out even though she's thought about it when she's alone. Since she doesn't talk, no one really remembers her because she hasn't really done anything memorable.

"I miss the catch if they throw me the ball/ I'm the last chick standing up against the wall/.../"They call me 'Quiet Girl'/But I'm a riot"

I think this part is showing that it's always been that way since she was young (like being the last girl picked for the teams on the playground) but she's gotten to a stage where she's hot and all dressed up but she still can't say anything. And the worst part is (I'm a riot) that she's cool and funny but no one knows that because no one really know her.

I like to think that she's right at that place where she finally gets who she is and is about to be able to do all the things that she hasn't done because she's gotten to the point where she dresses up and goes out and she's taken steps to be more outgoing, but she just needs a little time. I think her frustration in the song is what is going to lead her to be more aggressive and find her voice.

Deep interpretation to such a kitschy song, huh?

So I thought that I should listen to the original just to be fair. Guess what I found out? (IMHO) Cash outclasses NIN by leaps and bounds and then more leaps and bounds.

Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
The first thing that I'm going to say is that I have never heard the Nine Inch Nails version of the song. That said, I don't think that there is anyway that their version can be more powerful than the Johnny Cash version. I literally have problems actually listening because it touches me so much and the pain in his voice is so acute. I want to cry every time I hear it and it actually hurts me to listen to him sing. Powerful, powerful stuff.

I love this song as well, but I have the a cappella version, I haven't heard the version from Little Voice, but this version is brilliant as well. You really hear the strength of her voice against the a cappella choir, especially at "Down..." You should give it a listen.

'Awww dip i used that line, line, line again."

Yeah, that's the one thing that bothers me for the sheer fact that that line is one of the few NOT repeated lines in the song. I love the song but what's up with that?

Mika – Billy Brown Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is along the same lines as what people have previously said, being sexually confused, but I think that "He met a girlie who was brave enough to say,
When they made love he shared the burden of his mind.
Oh Billy Brown you are a victim of the times. " is more speaking of the fact that people are made to choose a label, gay straight, or otherwise, and then have problems trying to live up to that image, instead of just living their lives openly.

I think him being a victim of the times is about how he basically destroyed his own life because he couldn't live with a lie, but also couldn't commit to his "secret life" because it wasn't right for him. And then he met this girl that's like "You poor guy, twisting yourself up for no good reason"

I really didn't mean to go that in depth with an analysis. Damn you, Mika :-D

I really do like his music, though. He has a brilliant way of making the most depressing thing into a happy format.
