| I think this song is written for a new love. It's about letting go of the fear of failing that a new relationship brings. When you find someone, you just have to let yourself go. You have to tell your lover that you want them to feel the hope that you feel and to understand your soul, your feelings and emotion. Maybe this wont work out but we are not going to hold back from each other. I just want you know know exactly who I am and it will be beautiful. We can't fight our feelings, so let's just make a go of it. I dont know what the Common One is though,,, It was a Van Morrison record, but that doesn't make sense to me. | |

| This song is about comfort. It's about all of the things that make you feel good, the things that are always there. It's about finding comfort in love and satisfaction in everything and nothing. It's about safety and warmth. It is most certainly NOT about marijuana. | |

In the first verse, picture the protagonist looking into a mirror. The protagonist is struggling with some decision or feelings that he/she is having difficulty coming to terms with. The line "you are not me", should not be taken literally. This is a literary device called irony and it serves to strengthen the theme of inner struggle, a duplicity. The verse serves to reflect that the protagonist has recognized a new or previously undiscovered facet of himself/herself and is struggling with denial. In this song the protagonist attempts to define and contain the new idea of self that he/she has discovered. In the chorus the protagonist recognizes a that he/she is a model of duplicity. He/She takes an objective look at himself/herself and challenges himself/herself to recognize that he/she is not the same person that he/she has led himself/herself to believe. the protagonist separates himself/herself from the persona he/she struggles with. In the next two verses the protagonist explains hat he/she intends to keep this persona in check or destroy it. The protagonist describes the effects of the self destructive behavior that this other mentality may elicit. The protagonist also describes that maintaining the illusion that this conflicting persona has created, is dangerous. At the end of this song the protagonist addresses the disappointment in that he/she has failed to maintain the outlook or persona that he/she believes to be right or sound. When I was twelve, before I understood literary device, this song was about a girl. I now believe it to be written with open interpretation in mind. TasChiBandGirl has the right idea in my opinion, thematically if not literally. |
