It's just how fucked up the youth of America is...all of the horrible things that happen on a daily basis, and how instead of taking steps to try and fix it, we glorify the violence and all that bullshit.
Great, great song with a great, great message. |

| Third Eye Blind – The Background Lyrics

For me, I seem to think that Stephan Jenkins almost always blurs the lines between the end of a relationship and the end of a life (he kinda does the same thing in "God of Wine"). His lyrics are enigmatic enough that they suggest both a break-up and a tragic death.
Regardless of how she left him, this is obviously a song of deep, heartwrenching regret, and how he just can't seem to let go of this person. He still plans his life around her, speaks to her if she were there, and carries her memory with him "in the background," or in the deep recesses of his heart and mind. She may not be at the forefront of his thoughts 24/7, but she's there.
God, I love this song...I sobbed like a baby the first time I heard it, along with God of Wine. The last three tracks of 3eb's self-titled album are probably some of the most emotionally-draining and powerful songs I've ever heard in my life. |

A relationship torn asunder by alcoholism. The first couple of verses seem to suggest that perhaps she was verbally/emtionally/psychologically abusive while she was drunk, and he put up with it just because he was wasted out of his mind too ("I walk home alone with you/and the mood you're born into/Sometimes you let me in/And I take it on the chin"). But then she is in a car accident caused by her own alcoholism ("The God of Wine comes crashing through the headlights of a car"). He sees that what they're doing to their bodies is wrong, and he begs her to get clean with him ("Can we get clean again").
Here I see two possible scenarios: either she leaves him because she's not willing to give up her vice or she eventually dies. Either way, she is out of his life, and he turns back to drinking ("The God of Wine is crouched down in my room") and he gets angry with her ("You let me down, I said it/Now I'm going down/And you're not even around"). Finally, at the end of the song, he laments that he could not have been the one to save her ("Searching for something that I could never give you").
So that's my interpretation, whether it goes against theories that have already been established or not. |

Quite a few Shabutie songs were about sex...specifically sex with Nikki Owen (Disciple's Anthem immediately comes to mind). This is probably just another one of those songs, where Claudio and the gang rock the fuck out and sing about freaky-deaky intercourse. And there's nothing wrong with that. :) |

Great song, probably my favorite from Bob's pre-Sugar career. Sounds like Bob musing on the state of the world in 1990...kinda like the precursor to "Circles" on his "Body of Song" album in 2005. |

In my opinion, the best Shabutie song. As to its meaning, I would guess that Claudio is speaking to this Cassio about (possibility) his infidelity, and where they can go from here. At some points (the "Cassio, what the fuck?" lines) it's almost like he's taunting her to break it off. In the end, she eventually does.
And if I had to make a guess as to who/what Cassio is, it's most likely Nikki Owen, since most Shabutie songs seem to have to do with her. |

Like hardcor_toonz said, it's about regret at its most broad...he's looking at the current state of the world, the music industry, and his relationships (with lovers and God) and wondering what the hell happened. |

| Sugar – If I Can't Change Your Mind Lyrics

A helpless break-up song. Bob wants the object of his affection to stay with him, but knows that there is nothing that he can say or do to "change their mind," or make them stay.
Great song, makes me envious that I was only two years old when this song (and amazing album, Copper Blue) came out and I had to miss out on a great era of music! |
