I love the song. I think the lyrics are a little off though, in that it's "waiting for the sunrise" not "racing for the sunrise." |

I agree with most of what's been said before, but just something I think is really cool: Dido obviously has knowledge of mythology (her name is the name of Aeneas' lover-Queen who he abandons to go to Rome and who later kills herself), and I think she brings some of that knowledge into the song. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the story of Hippolyta, but it really fits. She's an Amazon queen (Amazons are hunters) who gets stolen away from her kingdom by Theseus and is forced to be his wife. There's an allusion to this in a Midsummer Night's dream, as Hippolyta is Theseus' bride, and there is some friction between them. I don't want to sound like a stuffy snob, I just thought Hippolyta's myth fits in really well with this song, as an independent woman (amazon) is yearning for freedom. |

2nd: This song is simply about a screwed up girl in an abusive relationship. She is in hell and thinks of herself as a prostitute because her boyfriend hurts her all the time, yet she has a thing for "bad boys" and can't end it. She's stuck in a dilemma and switches between saying she wants to f**k him and kill him. Very interesting song. |

I have two ideas for this song.
1. This is a small bit of a stretch, but it could be about a prostitute that's been murdered. Jezebel used to be another word for a hooker and she "is in hell" i.e. dead. "John" is another name for a hooker's client, so she picked up the wrong guy one day who had anger management problems (Angry Johnny) and he murdered her. She harbors hate for him, but because she has spent most of her life having sex with people, the song ends up having a dual meaning, about both getting back at the murderer and resuming her career (notice the pause after "blow you" A very hookerish type of thing to say). |
