| Brand New – Vices Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| uhh, you must not listen to a lot of fear before. maybe their latest cd, because it sounds more mainstream than any of the others, but when i first heard this song, and still listen to it, fear before never did and never will come to mind. | |

| the imagery and beauty of this song and it's lyrics blows my mind. s7b is wonderful! | |
| School of Seven Bells – Dust Devil Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| it seems like an extension of "bye bye bye" not so much the song, but the idea behind it. waiting for someone to come back around. when they finally do, she has grown almost bitter about being left behind, and that leaves her with no choice but to walk away. | |
| School of Seven Bells – Face to Face on High Places Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
see, i feel like this song is about someone who got caught up in the monotony of life, and was just going through the motions. like maybe stuck in a job she hates, but has given up trying to find anything else. or devoting herself to her education and reaping no benefits and getting burned out, or even just pushing herself too hard with her music career and getting nowhere. because she gave up on finding an escape, it seems like she also gave up on other parts of her life. "two winters pass in a blur of sleepless nights" seems more like a time period of just how long she had felt this way, not really a time she was seeing someone long distance. "all those times i'd hung my head to keep the peace, i had buried all my strength and will down deep" translates to me as this girl or woman who stopped being opinionated and strong because disagreeing and causing conflict was wearing down on her, and nothing seemed worth fighting for anymore. but then someone comes along in her life that might be in the same problem, or just has a general struggle of their own, that she helps bring them out of, which in turn, gives her life again - "saving you, saved me." |

| School of Seven Bells – Bye Bye Bye Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
this song is so beautiful. it's obvious, but seems to be about a relationship that hits a rough patch, and decide to take a break with the intention of returning to one another, but the other person never comes around. the rest of the song is learning how to cope, and eventually, getting past it and being strong enough to let it go and let the other person come to terms with how they handled everything. |

i'm surprised no one has commented on this song yet. i'm more than positive it's about lucid dreaming, and the process one has to follow to become good at manipulating your dreams when in that state. |

| Circa Survive – Dyed in the Wool Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
i agree with the two people who related this song to a breakup. when i heard this song (which is lovely, decoded or not) i immediately felt it was someone in a relationship who realized they had fallen out of love with their significant other. feeling like it had been reduced to just going through the motions in a relationship ("find ourselves giving away"/"going to waste") i.e. being intimate with the other person just because they're there and you are close with them, or coming to terms with the fact that you're with this person who you should feel loved and complete with, but instead you feel "totally alone." it almost seems like the other person is saying they understand, and accept it, but they're only saying that to avoid conflict or trying to mask their own hurt for the sake of the other person. "and nothing's going to change that hopeless feeling i get when you say you'll understand and i know you can't," even though the other person knows it is and will be hard for them, "i have never seen you act that way before, totally exposed." just my interpretation. |

| Phoenix – Girlfriend Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
when i first heard this song, it seemed to me that maybe it was about a guy who was more invested in a relationship than the girl he's with. he's been single/alone for a long time, and then she came around. he's ready to jump in and be with her, but he's not getting the same response. he calls her his girlfriend, but she doesn't exactly consider their relationship that serious, maybe? "i say it outloud but you just don't care." you know, the test of seeing how serious things are with someone you're seeing is to refer to them as your girl/boyfriend and wait for their reaction. haha, i mean, the unspoken test. and the "farewell 'til you know me well" part always stood out to me as he's going to back off until she decides to step it up and come around. but the dry spell idea is definitely believable. and an amusing idea for such an upbeat and pretty song. |

| A Fine Frenzy – Electric Twist Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
maybe. i think it's about being with someone that brings about your wilder, more carefree side in a relationship versus all the relationships that came before it, which are now considered monotonous and dull. he's telling her to let go of that boring, processed way of being with someone, and to take it as it comes and just go with everything ("don't think, don't talk"). and she's saying how he might get away with it, and even though he's making her feel good, ultimately their relationship might not last, but she's okay with that, accepting that it's part of love ("it's a risk, it's a risk, yeah"). a song about being with someone who's not like the others. someone who changes your way of viewing love and dating, and it feels good. it's a vibrant, crazy experience. |

what is the brown headed bird, with a five letter name, that she's singing about? i can't think of what birds fly south for the winter that fit that description. haha kind of nerdy question i guess. |

| A Fine Frenzy – New Heights Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
about a mysterious, beautiful love whom she wishes to be closer to, in every way, mentally, physically, and emotionally. the love between the two that is unfolding is unprecedented in her life, and the two are constantly "reaching new heights" in their love, and are continually seeking how to make it even better every day they are together, if it's even possible ("seeking how to keep them high"). just about being in love with someone absolutely amazing, and how good and magnificent it feels to experience everything with that person. |
|
| A Fine Frenzy – The World Without Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
i think the song is about two lovers whose relationship is starcrossed (wonderful play on words writing about the moon telling the stars to make it "hard for them", in some way or another. pete and heloise were two people in love; pete was a teacher of some sort, and heloise was his student, and they fell in love, but they had to keep their love a secret. long story short, she got pregnant and to keep everything from getting worse, pete became a monk and heloise an abbess, but for the rest of their lives they struggled to keep their feelings for each other within reason of their religious life choices, never being able to really show it, but never ceasing the feeling. the whole song obviously points to a couple where society, or people, or whatever makes it seem impossible for the two lovers to be together, but the narrator refuses to give up their love, and tells the other to keep the faith in their relationship, because despite the pain and strife they'll go through, they'll be together in the end. |

| A Fine Frenzy – What I Wouldn't Do Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
this song is about being afraid of falling in love, in my opinion. in the beginning of the song, she's singing about all the things she would do if she had "you" aka the object of her affection. then towards the middle of the song, she sings about how it came to that point (where she could finally show her love all she would do for him), but she didn't know how to say it (scared of what she was feeling, didn't know how to explain herself, nervous, etc.) and so she stays mum and removes herself from the situation, thus leading to the lyrics: "cause it was what i wouldn't do, i HAD you babe, i HAD you, it was what i wouldn't do, when i had you babe, i had you." so she finally did get that person, but she couldn't bring herself to say "i love you," so, like i said, she ditched the relationship before it got more serious. ("i left before someone got hurt"). the last part of the lyrics posted are wrong. |

| Bat for Lashes – I Saw A Light Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i can't listen to this song, it gives me insane goosebumps. when the song picks up with the piano, i just have to change it. i feel so sick and creeped out. but, i think that's what makes it an amazing song. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Two Planets Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
that's a decent interpretation. the more i listen to this song, the more i hear what i think it's about. i think this song is more of pearl and natasha battling it out for who will become the dominant personality. i think most of this song is pearl pleading with natasha to let her remain in existence. natasha knows pearl is a part of her being that is flashy, headstrong, alive, etc. but natasha also knows that is not truly who she wants to be. pearl is telling her "day cannot exist without a night," obviously stating that natasha may be day, but with day comes night, or pearl. they are intertwined. i listened to an interview on sirius radio when natasha did an acoustic session. she talked about how she was always connected with nature, and that pearl was brave (more of a nightlife femme fatal). the time came when she realized that natasha was who she was, and pearl was slowly subsiding. i think this song is definitely pearl's plea to remain alive and part of natasha's life. i think the last verse of the song is the very last night natasha lives through pearl. she's trying to fuse the two eternally, playing on the aspects of the female psyche being good-natured (natasha) and yet still vivacious (pearl) but the very last two lines are pearl's discovery that she is no longer meant to exist. "i know where the form is changing" she understands now that the transformation between her and natasha is never going to be the same and "i know that the stars will follow me" pearl is stating the natasha's identity (day) will remain with her but pearl's (night) will die with her as well. night no longer symbolizes pearl's awakening (describing the times when natasha would dress up as pearl in nyc with her ex-boyfriend) because it is leaving with her. i think this interpretation is pretty strong, as the big sleep could basically be pearl's final performance. |

| Nirvana – Breed Lyrics | 16 years ago |

i think this song is about how medication affects someone with bipolar or depression. sluggish, indifferent, confused, directionless, scared. i know plenty of people who take medications for these disorders and talk about how they don't give a shit about anything anymore. the medication makes them feel like they're not even themselves. there aren't highs and lows, just middle of the road, don't feel anything or care. plus, kurt had bipolar disorder. so it makes sense. write what you know, right? |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Two Planets Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i can't even write an interpretation. i get so lost in this song. it's eerie, ethereal and so layered. i absolutely am enamored with this song, natasha keeps getting better and better. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Travelling Woman Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| ohhhhh man i think this song totally epitomizes her supposed break-up (i'm not sure what her relationship status is as of late) with her boyfriend. natasha is trying to establish herself, her art, her music, everything and build herself up around it, and i'm sure (from experience) that doing so can often cause a wedge in relationships when both people are doing the same thing (i.e. her boyfriend being in a band). both are moving in different directions, and she's torn between staying with him and possibly sacrificing her dream, or moving forward with what she wants to do, and losing him. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Siren Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i agree with jae26. the siren interpretation, at least i feel, is more correct. it's a girl who wants to be good, loving, nurturing, caring, but the 'siren song' (as jae26) explained, drives her evil, destructive, and corrupted. i love the way thing song illustrates the dark and light side of a woman longing for love. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Pearl's Dream Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| no no no the first interpretation's lyrics of "past a sign that says 'good love town'" are right, not "good left town" it's an obvious reference to her song good love. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Moon and Moon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
i always wonder, do you think since natasha refers to herself as the bat, that her boyfriend is the bear? there are other references to bears in her songs, i've noticed. "where's my bear to lick me clean? feed my soul milk and honey?" those are obviously very nurturing lyrics. i love this song. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Good Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
love is a burning thing = ring of fire lyrics (johnny cash). she did a springsteen and cure cover. i'm assuming a lot of her artistic references and covers are of music she grew up listening to. tying her work now in with her youth. just an observation. listening to this song, i hear the story of a girl who just wants true love. the lyrics are blatantly stating it. it's a girl who wants the love that lasts forever, that keeps you happy, that makes you good. she's holding herself back though, pressing that self-destruct button every time things get good ('but i need sorrow, baby, like sorrow is the drug' [that's what i hear, not "life's sorrow"]) it's a girl that ruins everything good, and she wants it, but she's scared she's never going to find true love. she gets close (i.e. all of the imagery, dreams, etc. mentioned in the song) but she has yet to grab ahold of the real thing. |

how the shit would this be about tripping? every freaking word is about money, materialism, fame, etc. all the things that come from signing with a famous record company. everyone who has posted talking about the spin article is right. it's annoying as fuck when all you hipsters sign on blazed as hell and think everything in the world has to do with any drug possible. |

| Fear Before – Bad Days Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
on the bad days, we remember all the wrong things, all the old days. on the bad days, we remember all the wrong things, all your old ways. we think we live forever and then you find out one day, all that you gave is now gone. turns out it's not worth keeping, i can't do this anymore, some people aren't worth your time. what's on your mind may not fade, barely remember your name, the thunderstorms in our hearts, infinity at our feet. i never say what i mean, at least i mean what i say. the key to happiness is a slightly bad memory, all i ever wanted was to love the one that came before you, all i ever wanted was to love the one that got away. i said, "get up!" but i'm not even trying, i cannot tell you how long i've been lying. we think we live forever and then you find out one day, all that you gave is now gone, what was that anyway? on the bad days, we remember all the wrong things, all the old days. wish our lives were different but they wouldn't be our lives. i keep my eye on the prize and the pen to the paper always. always. no one understands you, no one understands. |

| Fear Before – Everything's Not Shitty Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
everything seems obvious from here above the earth seems soft, seems the people get along, seems for once we do belong. ah, but a closer look reveals the earth is sticky with our greed. try to hold the fuck on, stick our fingers in like seeds! "coming from a cynic this sounds like the same old song." at least i don't just sit there, at least i don't just nod. (everything's not shitty.) no, some things aren't so bad. so tell me mr. positive why am i so bored? why am i so sad? [unintelligible whispering] (everything's not shitty.) the plants, the birds might disagree, they sing a tune quite ominous, there must be something wrong with us. our fingers in the ground, our bodies stick straight up like plants, our sticky side now showing soon we'll be covered in ants. and with our skin exposed, they'll chew us down to bone like six legged architects building fancy homes. and in hindsight we, should have maybe prepared for this. blame it all on he, who distracts us with shiny things. so i say we look at this in a brand new light: for the time being at least we are alive... a metaphysical being on a hell of a track tried to shoot for the moon but got last and came back. with a set of chipped teeth and a chip on his shoulder. tried to get on with his life but his life it was over. (the planets met up for a drink and decided to fuck with this one.) so a broken spirited man with nowhere to go tried to shoot himself dead but the bullet swung low. ripped out all of his teeth and part of his tongue. tried to do it again but couldn't pick up the gun. (the planets turned on the tv and had a laugh or two on him.) we all end up bone, we all end up rot, it's the travels that we take, that make it worth while. we all end up deep, deep under the dirt, it's the things you will see that give life its worth. _____________ there you go, people. good god. |

| Animal Collective – Street Flash Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
it's extremely annoying when people constantly assume every damn song is about acid or shrooms and drugs. people do write about more than just that, you know. it is "ancient dates" not apes. i really think this song is about being in that lethargic, uninspired mood. you want to change, but you just haven't the energy. i think bosch's "inside fever" reference is dead-on, and i think the "couch fiibers kept you inside" relates to just lounging around in the house all day, with the intention to get things done, but then you just end up laying around watching television. we've all done and felt it. |

| Copeland – There Cannot Be A Close Second Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
(disclaimer, i'm not some hardcore religious person, but i'm pretty seasoned in the Catholic faith, so i'm just going by what i know) all that aside, the song is about God. "You've got an extra special heart A perfect light that shines through And it seems the hardest part Is shining back at you Shining back at you" God loves us unconditionally. he doesn't pick and choose, he loves each of us with all of Himself. it's easy for Him to love all of us, but when we decide to fall in love with someone on this earth, a lot of people tend to put their relationships as the first priority and God gets put on the backburner. so "the hardest part" is loving God back, before loving your significant other. "So forgive me Cause I don't know what to do When you look at me There can be no hesitation There cannot be a close second to you I don't know what to do When you look at me When you look at me" God is always watching, so He knows when we put something else before Him. the singer knows he has put his significant other before God and he feels bad, because he doesn't know how to react, or make things better. he knows what he's doing is wrong. i can see how people would think this part would be about a person, but the singer is writing as though God does happen to be a person he's talking to. "I've got a perfectly normal heart Bruised and broken from within At times I don't know how to start To let you in here To let you in here" the singer has been hurt from worldly relationships (ex. from relationship with human beings) and that has caused him to lose his faith a little bit. the typical "why would God let this happen to me" or "why me, God" when something bad happens. he knows he wants faith in his life, but he really just doesn't know where to start. in a nutshell, the singer knows he wants and has to get God back into his life, he's just not sure what he can do to make it happen. he does know though, that to make things right, God has to be his first priority, nothing else can come first, or equal to his relationship with God. and this doesn't necessarily mean with a boy or girlfriend. this could be with family members, friends, addictions, etc. a lot of people put other things (money, posessions, substance, people, etc.) before their relationships with God. i think that's more or less what Journey and thronesforcrowns meant. |

| Bat for Lashes – Horse and I Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
elizah is right. natasha had a dream about a black horse coming to her window. she was to accept a quest. bloodreactor is somewhat right as well. this song also has ties with joan of arc, almost reflecting her quest. just from what i've read, of course. |

| springsteen cover. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Sarah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i believe this is about a young girl who looks up to this older girl. the older girl is your typical rebel; she's sexually uninhibited, indifferent with her emotions, sarcastic or mocking, and most likely atheist, from how the songs portrays her. the young girl puts her on a pedestal and wants to be like her, and finally gets the chance when "sarah" decides to basically hand over her badass title. that's what it basically translates to when it says "take her place." the whole cutting out sarah's heart and whatnot, it's just a metaphor for her being heartless and unfeeling to the emotions of others. the young girl knows it's not going to be easy "adopting sarah's heart" because it's not really easy to go from being a regular person to someone who really just doesn't give a (blank) about anything. my interpretation, at least. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Bat's Mouth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
haha when i listen to this song i think of those animal nature documentaries where it's mating season and the narrator explains exactly what's happening. so when i hear this i think of two bats mating, but somehow the band actually turns it into a beautiful song, by personifying the bats and giving them human thoughts and feelings. odd concept, but the other interpretations on here sound a little more believable and a lot more rational than mine haha. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – The Wizard Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
honestly, when i listen to the words of this song, and considering how bfl writes, i get the feeling this song is actually about a tribe, or group, where a "wizard" almost sort of takes control of the group. the first few lines of the song sound extremely sexual, and it seems to me that the wizard sort of takes advantage of the women, but they don't really fight back because "he will be our leader." it really just reminds me of jungle tribes, where this does happen a lot. older men in the group, usually the "mystics" have multiple sexual relations with a lot of the younger women in the tribe, but they're allowed to do so because the mystic claims that he'll be able to predict their futures or that sleeping with him will mean they will have a prosperous life. that's just what i get out of the song. |
