Just think about those verses: "The hooks to my brain are well in" (l. 4) - Children's education was shaped to stir up hate against so-called 'imperialists', 'militarists' and 'human traffickers' which were 'reigning' in Bonn (Capital of West Germany) and Washington. This is no joke! Remember when people all over the world demonstrated against the hydrogen bomb? There are statements from former pupils from East Germany who said their teacher only allowed them to protest too, if it was against the existence of the AMERICAN hydrogen bomb, as only stupid or evil people would protest against the SOVIET hydrogen bomb! Of course, they didn't absorb this mentality, but it still had a great impact for the rest of their life. "I face the impregnable wall" (l. 8) - Well that's obvious... |

I agree with most of you, as Jesus had a profession as carpenter (line 27), but the "..no evil" part at the end is definitely not a description of Jesus' death - It is rather the attitude of someone who mistrusts everything he senses. Don't you know the saying of the "three wise monkeys"? The first monkey kept his ears shut, the second covered his eyes and the third kept his mouth shut. It's a japanese saying to condone worse situations to appreciate the rest of life, but our western culture misinterpreted it and changed the meaning into the desire "to refuse to believe something real". The "..no evil" thing in this song seems to be the western interpretation of the three monkeys, since the penultimate paragraph says "there's nothing real".. To connect all pieces of the puzzle i would say that the song describes people's misbelief in god, whose name is Azrael in the plot of the story. It could be the reason for him to dissolve the very world he created. |
