I think Acolyte, xtravar, Arafelis, etc. all have a definite grip on this song's meaning. I didn't quite catch on to it at first but now that I look at it it's pretty obvious that it's about commercialism and how it's what really motivates the country (hence: democracy's a joke). I may be wrong but I always thought he was saying 'take a bite of this album' not 'take a bite of this apple'. It kind of makes more sense with 'apple' though. |

Everyone here seems to be on the right track. This song is apparently about the corporate world and how they mislead and manipulate the truth to achieve their own means (just look at monsanto). Most people don't bother to read the small print so they get sucked into the deal and practically sell themselves. Scary shit. By the way, did anybody else at first think he was saying "I'm the piece God never played"? (as in a musical piece) I actually kind of thought that fit into the meaning of the song, like with the devil theory, that he's bitter because he was never allowed to live to his full potential... Well, that's not quite the lyrics, so I guess it doesn't matter, but I thought that was kind of cool. I really like this song =] |

In spite of what the title implies to the sick mind... I think this song is about a relationship that's not working out or that all the passion has gone out of. "I wander round the gulf between us" just sounds like they've grown apart and "come on let's fight let's feel alive" seems like he's desperate to inject some passion into the relationship again. That's what I think, but the masochism idea was interesting too. I think it's a really beautiful intense song, I wish it was easier to find, since it doesn't seem to be on any album. |

I also first heard this song in the movie Joshua. Dave Matthews wrote it for the movie so that makes the song a bit difficult to find, which kind of sucks. In relation to the movie, I'm guessing that 'the fly' is supposed to be his parents. He doesn't really expect them to love him, and even though he hurts them, they never seem to wonder why, thus "the fly never wonders why I did it" I guess all he really wanted was to be with his uncle, because it seemed like he was the only one who really cared about joshua while his parents were preoccupied with the baby. He's pretty sick and sadistic though, so I guess he only knew one way to get what he wanted. Still, you have a pretty good idea but you're never really sure about whether he's evil or not, maybe he really was being abused or something. I mean, it had to come from somewhere, and his parents weren't exactly the best... |

| I don’t think this song is necessarily saying that you should kill men because all men are misogynists, etc. Anyone who thinks that menocide is liberating needs help. I know sometimes I think I hate all men because of what one did to me or because of the oppression I see in other countries and stuff like that. I don’t hate men but sometimes you can’t help the way you feel and I guess this might just be a purging of that feeling. I don’t think “kill your masters” means women should kill their husbands or whatever, you just shouldn’t be slaves to them. | |
