This song came out in the late 1980s. Michael Stipe was no lover of the Reagan administration's policies on many issues and I believe that this song is a reflection of that.. This song is about taking the bad/negative aspects of the world as it is (was), and saying that all of that will change (for the better). It's actually a song about optimism! "It's the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT, and I feel fine." |

I saw Buffalo Tom play recently. They closed the show with this song. It's a great song, but so were the other twenty or thirty they played that night. If you like this song, buy the CD it's on, "Big Red Letter Day". I promise you that if you like this song then you'll like the whole CD. Then look up the video for "Tangerine" on youtube. When you've fallen in love with that song (not because of the video, but because of the song) you'll want to go out and get "Sleepy Eyed". It's a great CD as well. Then, you'll want Buffalo Tom to play in your town so you can see them close the show with "Late at Night". |

I'm not sure about the whole song, but the first verse sounds like someone has receieved a rejection letter from a publisher for a manuscript he has submitted. Rejection letters from publishers, record companies, colleges, girlfriends, and so forth often include a "thank you for your interest in our (company, college, whatever)" line before they sink your hopes and dreams. Maybe that's too literal an interpretation, I don't know. That's all I've got on this one. Great song though. |

A swinging party is public execution by hanging. That's my guess. Paul is saying that he's guilty of a lot of things (being wrong, making bad choices) and if those things are crimes, he'll hang for them (figuratively, of course). |
