I've loved this song for years so here is my 2 cents: Firstly; it's a love song and not about suicide or rape. However there is a change of pace which I will get to. This song switches between him being there, and him looking back at it... "Lay back baby and we’ll do this right There’s blankets in back we can use I’ll start the car, but we’ll stay in park A cold can kill us before fumes" Self explanatory, think American's parking by the lake in movies. He has blankets in the back of his 4 by 4 they can use to do whatever He starts the car so they're warm "Now’s the right time for a good song Get something to say what I can’t Do you feel bad, like I feel bad? Pour us a road, we’ll both drink and drive " He puts a song he loves on (maybe this song :P) to say what he can't He asks her does she feel bad like he feels bad, is she sad about the same things he is, aka is she depressed about the same things, about life about friends etc. They both drink some more, they'll both be drinking and "driving" "Kiss me with your cherry lipstick Never wash you off my face Hit me I can take your cheap shot Leave you with the love we made" She kisses him, and he feels he'll never wash that cheek He makes a joke, and she hits him but he can take it They'll leave here having made love - but more on this later "Come alive on the driver’s side So close I taste your breath Your lips go dry, but there's a sweet inside Wine must go right to your head" Things have stepped up a gear now, and they're making out and stuff. He can taste her breath She has dry lips, but sweet inside The wine has gone to her head "It’d be easy if you get mad But three fingers point back to you" Change of pace - In the future she has gotten mad at him but its not just his fault "We could stay here Stay out all night No one would know, us and the moonlight" Back to memories - They could have stayed there all night Alone and together in the moonlight "I set my watch by street-side clock A needle in echo groove" The present/future - He's meeting up with her years after An groove echo is something to with vinyl music, so the music has gone wrong Just like they're relationship did "You pierce my heart like a willing arm Your ticking makes my blood move" The past - She has pierced his heart so that HIS heart no long control his bloody flow HER ticking is what is making his blood move "Theres no way out, This fade out Be happy to get what you do" Double meaning - Maybe they shouldnt have done this, but theres no way out and there is no way they could stop now. Things are building to a climax, Future - She should be happy with the good things they got together. "Make him notice... With both fists" They're in the throws of passion, so she's clawing at him or such "Cause quitting alone will never get you dry" Instead of saying without me you'd never get wet he is saying without me you'd never get dry. You wouldn't have had any release No climax, or finish. Essentially - you'd always have wondered what could have been Its a love song, a sex song, about they're first time and how she regrets it but he says he is glad it happened. It happened in the back of the a car in a public place and ultimately they're relationship came to nothing But he says no, it was worth more than that. At the time you didn't regret it and its better than wondering what would have been. If anyone has any evidence to the opposite, point it out to me. |
