| Alexisonfire – It Was Fear Of Myself That Made Me Odd Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is actually borrowed from the text of a Kurt Vonnegut (sp?) short story called "The Barnhouse Effect" in the collection "Welcome to the Monkey House". In the story, a university prof. learns to control the outcomes of rolling dice with his mind, and as his talent grows, the more he thinks the more destructive his mind can become. all of this story is told through the narrative of one of this students, to whom Dr. Barnhouse confided in about his new power. Dr. Barnhouse seems out of whack, loopy and absented-minded, because whenever he concentrates, his telekinesis goes on rampage and destroys things. He goes on to say, "It was fear of myself that made me odd", the title of this track, illustrating how he became so crazy in an effort to control his destructive powers. it turns out the story is a letter to the governemnt, and the story ends as the narrator confides that he too, has learned how to control objects with his mind from Dr. Barnhouse, and will use them against any oppressive actions by governments around the world. As Geoffk said, the mind is a powerful thing I believe that this track demonstrates how the boys of AOF felt with their new popularity as a band, that they had all this new power and influence over their fans and a growing fan base, so there was good to be done with their new legitimacy. |

| This song is actually borrowed from the text of a Kurt Vonnegut (sp?) short story called "Happiness by the Kilowatt" in the collection "Welcome to the Monkey House". the lyrical content, about lungs being cold, windows broken, etc. is all from the story, which is about an invention that produces "happiness" in forms of a specific radio-wave. but what happens is, when it is plugged in, everyone becomes so euphoric they ignore common problems, like their house being broken, them getting sick as the weather gets colder, etc. The characters in the story cannot be bothered to do anything, because they are so happy. | |
