Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics 17 years ago
* to do - excuse half of my above comment not making sense - too many ideas at once, hard to get down in writing! ;)

And by the way, I read a few people saying not to pay attention to the lyrics and just enjoy the song - I actually find that quite sad, you're missing out on a massive part of the greatness of it.

I agree with both the general suggestions given on the first page (kinda gave up before getting through all 6 of them) that it's today with a person going 'insane' AND society being insane.
I went to a talk given by a psychologist and this reminded me of what he said - is it the 'sane' people in today's capitalist society that are in fact insane? Okay so that doesn't sound particularly relevant, but after reading people explaining about the whole 'you must be crazy to go on the grass' idea, the first four lines describe the 'insane' person deviating from the rules of society as happy and free, whereas the four lines describes the average people as 'lunatics' because in fact they are so caught up in the news about society today it is making them depressed and complacent ('the paper holds their folded faces to the floor')
Therefore the cheerful build-up of the chorus shows how when people who have gone 'mad' from society and eventually rejected it, they are at their happiest and are inviting other people to make that realisation.
I agree with the next lines being about a lobotomy, and how 'there's someone in my head but it's not me' - how medical professionals count any sign of 'madness' as just being mentally ill, rather than it actually being a part of the person's personality, and getting rid of it also rids them of their own individuality and creativity.
The last four lines I think are about 'waking up' and realising this 'madness' - or in fact, state of greater being (or whatever the phrase is!) but very few people being able to understand it, and you therefore have a whole new deeper perspective about life, 'playing different tunes' - as often the bands with the 'insane' songwriters are the most creative - with this song being the perfect example.

Audioslave – Heaven's Dead Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's clear that he sees the person this song is about as perfection, a goddess, hence the spiritual references. I think "heaven" is a metaphor for her dreams, the beautiful place in her mind that he is in love with, and that when she is unhappy they are stuck in the real world and unable to escape to her fantasies.

Being bored of being stuck in the real world with idiots you have to pretend to get along with even though they just conform to modern society and don't believe in what you do... anything you have to look forward to turns out to be the same crap as ever...

Devin Townsend – Things Beyond Things Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about how dreams of love/romance are always better than the real thing - knowing that you've got everything you always wanted but still having that uncomfortable feeling deep down that something isn't right, and feeling you'd still rather be in your own world.

I don't think it's just sexual... I'd be disappointed if it was, I think there's too much emotion for it to be that. I agree with BobbyjointRitual and think it's about how perfect his girlfrend/wife is, but his own inner unhappiness meaning he provokes her to treat him badly, therefore he feels he deserves it and actually quite enjoys it.
