Yeah the song was written about Jimmy Swaggart who preached that rock n roll is devil music, he even preached that Christian rock is devil music too (I am not even kidding, I am dead serious about this too). Jimmy Swaggart referred to Christian bands like Stryper as being of the devil, which was ironic because he had baptized Michael and Robert Sweet of Stryper before Stryper did Christian heavy metal. I am a Christian myself and I feel that Jimmy Swaggart was a pure hypocrite at it's finest, not to mention, I do not believe that the devil makes music, so how can one call rock n roll of the devil when the devil doesn't invent music. I know some people try to refer to Ozzy's music as being of the devil but in reality I do feel he has a lot of good songs that raise a lot of very good points. For instance Suicide Solution is not an encouragement to commit suicide, what Ozzy did was write the lyric to reflect that alcohol is a suicide drink and solution is a liquid, and it is obvious when you see the line of: wine is fine but whiskey's quicker, suicide is slow with liquour, take a bottle drown your sorrows, then it floods away tomorrows. The point he raises in the song is how dangerous it is to drink heavily and Ozzy knows it too well because he did it himself for a long time, he has gone sober last I checked, but he knows what happens if you drink too much or take too many drugs cause of what that stuff did to him. But oh gosh yeah, it's one thing to speak out against sinful acts but people like Jimmy Swaggart and Oral Roberts should've asked for prayers for Ozzy as well, but they never did, but when Oral Roberts needed medical treatment and money was raised to pay expenses, guess who donated to this? Ozzy Osbourne actually was nice enough to donate to the cause of paying Oral Roberts medical bills I am not kidding. |

In this one book I read about Black Sabbath, at the time Geezer Butler recorded Plastic Planet with Burton C. Bell on vocals, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward had both departed from the Tony Martin line up of Black Sabbath, swearing that they would never play in Black Sabbath again unless Ozzy was there on vocals. Now don't get me wrong, I have equal respect for all line ups of Black Sabbath, whether it be Ozzy, Dio, Ian Gillan, Ray Gillen, Tony Martin and well you know what im talking about and all that. But I do understand how Geezer was feeling himself, and when I read the book on Black Sabbath, and the part where Geezer explained why he had Burton C. Bell sing the lyrics to Giving Up The Ghost. Geezer explained that without all 4 original members in Black Sabbath, the purpose and meaning of Black Sabbath was dead and gone, hence the line: You can't admit that you're wrong The spirit is dead and gone You don't bother me You are history A legend in our own mind Left all your friends behind No one seems to care And satan is not there There's nothing left to boast Time to give up the ghost As you can see, the lyrics are Geezer's feelings on when the original Black Sabbath was no more. |

I actually know who this song was written about, it was written about a man with HIV named Frank Garrett, he was given the nickname of the Youngerman by Ronnie James Dio (ok I know Ronnie James Dio is not a member of Metallica but young man in Metallica's lyric line is based off Dio's nickname for Frank Garrett). No Leaf Clover by Metallica, was also written about Frank Garrett |
