| Del Amitri – Not Where It's At Lyrics

The lyrics seem pretty straightforward. The girl he wants isn't interested in him because he's not "in" or "hip" enough. An underrated power-pop gem. |

| The Hold Steady – One for the Cutters Lyrics
| 17 years ago

In this case "townie" is a reference to a college-age person living in a college town who doesn't attend the school in that town. The song is definitely taking some elements from the movie "Breaking Away", which deals with friction between students at Indiana University and locals, referred to as "cutters" since historically, stone cutting at the local quarry was the main source of employment in the town.
The song seems to be describing an affair between a (presumably rich) college girl, and a (presumably lower-middle class) townie, in which the girl is wrapped up in a murder investigation when her beau kills another townie. |

The swirling music and knowing lyrics do a fine job of conjuring up the mixed, deeply felt emotions of teenage years. One of their finest songs! |

One of the hidden gems in the Spoon catalog. It definitely strikes me as a song about wanting desperately to shake a drug addiction and be with the person you love. |

| Urge Overkill – Sister Havana Lyrics

This song always struck me as sort of a subversive message to the Cuban people. On the surface it looks like a come-on, but I think 'Sister Havana' is a reference to the Cuban people and the singer represents the United States. It's a call to 'overthrow' the communist rulers of the island and 'come around to my way of thinkin' which I believe is a reference to Western democracy/capitalism. And it's all set to a kick-ass guitar riff. It still holds up 15 years down the line. |
