I would love a line by line translation of this song. I know it is devoted to A.M. Klein, another immoirtal Canadian poet who was a tragic figure and mentor of Leonard Cohen. A.M. Klein was Jewish and very troubled. He suffered much due to the injustices that were occurring to himself and his people. After visiting the Nazi concentration camps after World War 2, AM Klein did attempt suicide and went into a severe depression. I do not understand however a number of the literary allusions made throughout this poem; some of which are likely allusions to Judism. It is quite a heart-felt tribute but I lack the knowledge to fully understand. |
