Cute Is What We Aim For – Time Lyrics 16 years ago
It's HEMISPHERES!!!
I've been to both hemispheres over my short years
I still can't pick my favorite place
(Don't make me)
The contour on your lips, they match the continents
And I still love the way that you taste.

I know it's hemispheres cause he also says CONTINENTS....think people. It's not that hard to interpret!

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 17 years ago
This is the "prelude song" to "Transatlanticism." Here is what it means.

1. This is the moment that you know
That you told her that you loved her, but you don't
You touch her skin and then you think
That she is beautiful, but she don't mean a thing to me
Yeah, she is beautiful, but she don't mean a thing to me
1a. He is telling a story about what a lot of people have been through or experianced. Stating "love" in moments of passion and then realizing that you really don't. It's merely lust. This is the intro to the song letting you know the subject of the coming verses.

2. I spent two weeks in Silver Lake
The California sun cascading down my face
There was a girl with light brown streaks
And she was beautiful, but she didn't mean a thing to me
Yeah, she was beautiful, but she didn't mean a thing to me
2a. In this verse he is introducing you, the listener, the the girl he met. He traveled a distance to California to see a girl in Silver Lake. He became intriged by her and in lust over her but realizes it's not love.

3. I wanted to believe in all the words that I was speaking
As we moved together in the dark
And all the friends that I was telling
And all the playful misspellings
And every bite I gave you left a mark
3a. He want's what he's saying to be true simply because she is so gorgeous. He wants to be in love with her but again realizes it's nothing but lust at this moment. He brags to his friends about her and what they've done and how much fun they've had and realizes that whether she knows it yet or not, everything he's doing to her will leave a mark scaring her heart. He's doing this consciencely.

4. As tiny vessels oozed into your neck
And formed the bruises
That you said you didn't want to fade
But they did and so did I that day
4a. This talks about her slowly realizing what he's doing, using her for the most part. But she doesn't care because she loves him and will take him any way that she can. But she lost him and every feeling he gave her. He decided to call it quits and it was time for him to leave.

5. All I see are dark gray clouds
In the distance, moving closer with every hour
So when you'd ask, "Is something wrong?"
I'd think, "You're damn right there is
But we can't talk about it now
No, we can't talk about it now"
5a. This is him explaining to you, the listener, how he feels about what he sees happening. He starts to feel sorry for her and realizes only dark clouds lie ahead for her if he continues. She'll become more attached and become more hurt. He breaks it off and trys to push her away. She asks is something wrong with her...looking for some reason why he wouldn't stay. Remember, she wants him despite his lack of feelings for her, but he doesn't want to talk about it now.

6. So one last touch and then you'll go
And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more
But it was vile, and it was cheap
And you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me
6a. This verse is from her to him. She wants one last touch or kiss from him before he leaves. She's going to try to pretend that it was more than it really was on his behalf. She tells him that what he did to her was vile and cheap, as her anger and broken heart starts to verbally show. Then she tells him that he never meant anything to her.

**this song ends with a train moving off into the distance and carries into Transatlanticism, where his new story about the situation takes off. At this moment, he's thinking about her saying he meant nothing to her. karma has come back around and he begins to see the mistake he made. Now listen to "Transatlanticism" and read my meaning for it on SM.

I think this song picks up where "Tiny Vessels" leaves off. At the end of "Tiny Vessels" is the sound of a train traveling that continues into the intro of this song, leading me to believe this is like a part TWO. Here is what I believe this song to mean:

1. The Atlantic was born today and I'll tell you how
The clouds above opened up and let it out
1a. I take this to mean that on his journey back home he started thinking about this girl he was with in "tiny vessels" and realized he cares much more than he thought he did. This verse means that tears started to fall from his eyes. Enough to fill an ocean. He's realized he's probably lost the one person he's always wanted, because of his actions.

2. I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean
Making islands where no island should go
Oh, no
2a. He explains why he's crying in a little more detail and explains what he's thinking. This means to say how his life was full of holes and incomplete, until he met her. Of course he just now realizes this when he's on his way back. The tears he is sheding signify her in this verse and how she filled every hole in his life. The second part of this mearly is figurative speech stating with every tear he sheds, the further he moves away from her. Like there is an ocean of tears between them and she is there and he is here, they are islands....and they shouldn't be like that. They should be together. The Oh, No is self explainitory, He's saying "oh no, what have I done!"

3. Most people were overjoyed; they took to their boats
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat
3a. This verse means, most guys would be overjoyed about this happening. Getting to be with a girl and then being able to leave the state and go flee home to avoid "strings attached" and escape the situation. They would be happy about it. He however, feels the exact opposite. The lake/moat part of this song is figurative speech again. In a lake you can travel to all sides anytime you want. Nothing is keeping you from doing that. With a moat though, it surrounds you, blocking you from crossing...The distance between them and the hurt he cause her has him to believe he'll never reach her or have her.

4. The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door
Have been silenced forevermore
The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
It seems farther than ever before
Oh, no
4a. Self explanitory... The first verse if figurative speech and the second comes from his heart with how he feels. The first means, He's not going to be able to see her anymore. He doesn't think she'll see him after doing what he's done...leading her to believe he loved her and then telling her he doesn't (Tiny Vessels). The second means, now that he knows how he feels and thinks she'll never take him back now, he feels more apart from her than he ever has before. Then he procedes to say "oh no," again realizing the err of his ways.

5. I need you so much closer explains itself. He needs her in his life. Now he's telling her, in hopes she'll go to him.

It's about a relationship between a guy and a girl, that gets rocky. It could be there second or third chance trying to make it work and he is troubled by it not getting better but does not want to give up. And it's about them doing all they can to make it work no matter how hard it is....then also I think it's the guy that may want it more than his girl. You can tell they are having hard time as it is referenced several times.
"Can we make this something gooood
Cause its all misunderstoooood
Well I tried to do it right this time around
Let’s start over
I tried to do it right this time around
It’s not over
Cause a part of me is dead and in the ground
This love is killing me
But you’re the only one"

It's fairly simple to understand I think.

It's not about no orgasm. It's about the feeling she gets when she's with her man. Kinda like the butterflies ya know? have you never been with someone who with one single touch or kiss just makes your body tremble? If not then maybe that's why you lack the understanding of this song.

To me, it's a beautiful song. I've felt this way before. In my situation I was with a girl and I thought I was ready to move on emotionally but I was still stuck on my ex and only had eyes and feelings for her....all the while this new girl only had eyes and feelings for me. Though I tried to convince myself that I had moved on, when it all came down to it, intimacy with the new girl revealed that I had not....it was a little depressing. Never told the new on that I loved her though. That shouldn't be thrown around.

I think everyone can relate to this song in some fashion or another and that it has no "specific" meaning but that it is meant to touch everyone's life and remind them of an experiance they've had...for me, it makes me think of someone I've always wanted but never had and probably never will have....fate sucks
