Tool – Sober Lyrics 12 years ago
You are an absolute fool of the highest order. It's clear cut what this song is about, from the title to the lyrics to band interviews. Reading crap into what isn't there doesn't make you enlightened, although judging by your comments, you're one of those who really think you are.

Having to share the planet with the brain dead masses that you epitomise is what makes me drink, and gives me more of an insight into this song than you'll ever have even were you to have functioning brain cells

The over analysis here is ridiculous. It's an addict struggling to deal with what they've done to their life, wishing it could be different but also wanting to continue on the same path.

Why the hell does everyone in this society think that if they see things that aren't there, they're insightful? Usually the obvious is the correct answer. 'Oooh he mentions Jesus and Mary, it must be about religion' ... idiots

I seriously hope dressed2depress is joking ... 'its actually about gong staright edge ' ... WTF?!?!

It is soooo obviously about dope and soooo completely obviously NOT about 'drawing black x's on your hands'. This song was released before anyone had even heard of emos, so dressed2depress, please get a clue!

Awesome song.

It's an apology (obviously) but what hasn't been mentioned is the role of alcohol.

It seems pretty clear to me that the apologist is a hopeless alcoholic (I'm sorry that I'm always pissed, I'm sorry that I exist, And when I look into your eyes, I can see you're sorry too ... classic!). It's not just those lines that lead me to think that way, the whole song seems to be about self destruction that is almost beyond the apologist's control.

Even the apology itself is kinda half hearted ... it's like the guy wants to be sincere, but he's done it all before, and he knows he's gonna do it all again, so there's no point putting too much effort into it

And the solution? Go and sit in the pub, presumably getting drunk again. A true reflection of life as an alcoholic, and the effect it has on the alcoholic's loved one. That's how I see it anyway.
