i'm on the same page as murphymoush. At first I was thinking he was leaving his wife and family (he sings of leaving often in his songs - see Southern Girl). The 1 & 1 is 2 and 2 & 2 is 4. I was thiking he just wasn't settled and needed to move on. Then, I began to think he’s leaving because he’s dying and he knows it. He’s taking the border road to the other side and he feels bad about leaving those he loves. |

| John Mayer – Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967 Lyrics

I've not read all the comments above but through the whole album you can hear JM saying live in the moment, take a chance, do something. I think he came up with the craziest thing he could think of, "a homemade, fan blade, one man, submarine ride". I mean, seriously? Are you kidding me? It's brilliant. He come up with this to fit into the theme of "when you're done with this world, you know the next is up to you". Because, the next IS up to you. Or, at least "when your done with this world..." is up to you.
I can almost hear him working through differnt things and finally coming up with "homemade, fan blade, one man, submarine ride" and saying, "yeah, that's cool."
Anyway, he's saying, take a chance. Do something. "With a will to work hard, and a library card" you can do anything.
Walt Grace made it. That's the whole deal. It may not always work out but if you don't try you'll never know. Walt Grace tried. And he called home from Tokyo. |

| Eagles – Pretty Maids All In A Row Lyrics

in the end you have nothing of a material nature(ribbons or bows), or at least none that really mean anything. even if you do, they remind you of a time and a place. all you have are your memories. "things to remember, places to go". these are your pretty maids all in a row. |

| Mat Kearney – Can't Break Her Fall Lyrics

isn't this what great writing is? haven't we all had someone whose fall we just couldn't break? although it's a difficult thing, to learn that you can't break someone's fall, and, for that person to learn that only they can break their own fall.....if you can both survive, it's a lesson that is better learned early. |

"I'm over the bridge and under the rain." he's pulled himself from the severity of the inevitably devestating flooding river that we all must if we are to move on. but the cold stinging drops of (p)ain are still f'ing with him from time to time. and may always... anybody else hear that? |
