He wrote a whole song based off the line "Engine severes lower legs" which is actually kind of funny. The irony of course is that the character doesnt realize that he was never able to do anything to avoid death, or even to live, and since he has neither the ability or the will, he will die as 'all the man [hes] ever been' and North AM Transcontinental is the means of his demise as well as the means of his only change. "All the man Ive ever been" is a great line, mainly because it points out that the man has been immobile his whole life. He compares himself to the man who had to chop off his own legs to survive, and in doing so proves to himself that he is neither capable nor willing to survive. Its funny how some people can go their lives without ever living. |

| My interpretation of this song is that the narrator (cuz it may not be autobiographical of Isaac) is reflecting on a time in his life when he was young and idle. That is to say, reflecting on his post-highschool years when he worked a shitty job and basically spent all his free time getting in trouble. 'Here it comes' is referring to the future, because time doesnt stop, but hes reached a point in his life where he is stuck. Drowning in birthday cakes is time passing, and 'step away from the screen/grass grows green' sounds like a drug reference, like kids home alone with too much free time and an eighth to smoke before mom gets home. Its definitely a reflection on uncertain times, and I wish it had made it onto The Moon and Antarctica. | |

This is one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs, and it didnt even make it to a real album. I think Building Nothing Out Of Something is their best album, the greatest showcase of Isaac's lyrical talent and the template for their unique sound... and its just a comp of some extras that didnt make it onto Interstate 8. I too am a fan of "broken hearts want broken necks," and it reminds me a lot of Here It Comes and Sleepwalking. Modest Mouse is definitely the tits. |

| I love the whole metaphor behind this song. Its very clever, in true Isaac style. Im on a road shaped like a figure eight, Im going nowhere but Im guaranteed to be late. Fantastic. | |

this song is about mount rainier erupting and the ensuing carnage that it causes. its his journey from the west side to billings montana, where it is safe from ash and shit. thats where the tahoma reference comes in. "better pray the car dont stall," "tahoma calls," "the pass will close if the [ash] clouds start rolling in," and Im assuming that 'being stuck again' is in reference to when st helens erupted and he was probably three or four and stuck in tacoma. you gotta love botch and their craziness. my favorite part is the directions out of seattle to safety in billings. |
