I think this song could be interpreted in different ways, depending on your experiences, past, etc... I think it's about someone who's held to a high standard, and it's getting to that point where it's just too much. Perhaps you're supposed to be this perfect, over achieving, moral person but you realize that you can't do it all and you're only human. "Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the contrast of white on white." Masking your feelings so nobody else notices that you're really breaking inside? "And in between the moon and you the angels get a better view of the crumbling difference between wrong and right." Starting to lose sight of what you want, your values, your morals, etc... Just being confused. |

| I do agree that confining the meaning of this song to a same-sex relationship doesn't do it justice. I do agree it can be about any sort of love that's forbidden or looked down upon. | |

I think it's about any relationship that people don't approve of, whether it be long love, same-sex love, interracial love, etc... And yet the only thing that matters is how much you love the other person and nothing else. Pretty cut and dry if you ask me. |

I'll be sticking right there with it I'll be by your side Sailing like a silver bullet Hit ‘em ‘tween the eyes Through the smoke and rising water Cross the great divide Baby till it all feels right When ever I hear that section I always think of a couple eloping, scared but investing so much hope in their actions. You stay loyal to each other, help each other out, get through the change with vigor, and adjust to a new situation until it feels normal. |

| I agree. I think it's about someone leaving their home (Philadelphia in this case) and moving on to bigger and better things. | |
| The Beatles – Across the Universe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is my ultimate happy song. It's that state of euphoria in which pretty much nothing can get you down. Any unfortunate event just "slip[s] away across the universe." | |

I agree with Breakinbenjaminfan's interpretation (though I think there are a few ways to interpret it.) This song was my anthem when I fell in love with my current boyfriend. My best friend hates him because of something that happened between those two a little while back (they used to flirt back and forth.) Then I fell in love with him after they stopped talking, and when my friend found out she was pissed at me. For a while I was worried I would've had to choose between the two, and I still deal with that fear. For the longest time I was thinking "he's just a boy and I vowed to not let a guy get endanger a friendship, but if my friend cared she'd grow up and see that I am actually happy with someone for once, but she's done so much for me..." It's tricky and I think this song can explain it better than I can. LOL |
