I suspect this song is meant to be ironic. I seriously doubt Perry Farrell has ever carried a gun, though I could be wrong. They're saying that respect earned with the barrel of a gun isn't real respect. It's making fun of "tough guys" who are only tough when they have an overwhelming advantage. I think it's a little more complex than that... because I'm SURE Farrell has had moments of wishing he did have a gun so he could turn around and make some smart-a$$ whimper. But I think overall point of this song is irony, not a call to arms. |

| Ani DiFranco – The Arrivals Gate Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I love the image of the airport as "purgatory". Nobody actually wants to be there... it's a transitory place... being there is a means to an end. I recently had to run an errand with a friend to the airport... neither of us was flying, she just needed to pick something up. We weren't in a hurry so we decided to stay and have a snack and a beer since we were there. Yeah, the prices are ridiculous, but it was worth the premium price just for the novelty of being in an airport when we didn't have anyone to pick up or any traveling to do. The mood in an airport is so unique, but it's hard to notice it when you're a member of that transitory crowd. This song reminds me of that evening... | |
| UNKLE – Burn My Shadow (feat. Ian Astbury) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I made a choice that derailed my life and everything I thought it would be. Now that the future I thought I was going to live has faded away, I stand at the edge of a future in which I can't see a clear path forward. I'm in a million spotlights... lit and exposed from every direction. I have no shadow. I cannot hide. I know I'm responsible for the decisions I make, but I don't accept that I was in complete control. Fate led me down this path. A bright irresistible light led me down this path. And when I was down, you didn't extend your compassion... instead you judged me. But I will rise up and the blinding light from my own burning heart will shine so brightly it will leave no shadows. How I feel is genuine and right. I see it. I see the light. You don't see it... but you will. |

I think your lyrics are really close, Punkmonkey. I posted a few minor corrections to what I think is the appropriate thread for fixing lyrics. Hopefully they'll be updated soon. This is definitely a song about an eternally optimistic guy who's head over heels for a girl. I say optimistic because, from the way Andy sings the song, I think he's ultimately going to get her. The line you have above "all the world that can tell me to get.... you" is actually, I think, supposed to be "all the world they can tell we're together, oh yeah". Which I think is the singer trying to tell the girl that everyone already knows they're in love, so once *she* figures it out everything will be wonderful. :) Oh, and in my corrected lyrics I think he's saying "just to hear 'you're wonderful' from you"... most sites on the web don't have the "you're" in there, but I swear when I listen to the song I can hear it every time. I could be wrong, but I think it makes sense... he really, really wants this girl to tell him she thinks he's wonderful. Great song - who *hasn't* felt this way? :) |

Sorry Pirate, but I think "Depanneur" is correct. "Depanneur" is a french word for a convenience store or corner store and is a common term in Quebec... remember Emily is from Canada. I think she's comparing a fancy martini to a cheap bottle of wine bought at a corner store (Bubble ball martini glasses are popular among the Nouveau riche. I thought the lyric was "bubble gumball martini" just a playful way of saying bubble ball martini by inserting the "bubble gum" phrase. Or, there is also a bubblegum martini... just s froofy twist on a regular martini). She's just trying to set up a contrast between what the sell-out artist is going to be able to afford to drink (the martini) vs. what the artist who doesn't sell out is going to be drinking (cheap wine). |
