Also, Bawa (A.S.) uses the word "Muhammad" to refer to different things, occasionally referring to the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). It's entirely possible that since Aaron was raised with Sufi influences, that his use of "Muhammad" is the same as Bawa (A.S.).

I don't see the connection with the "rook and jay" line. I think in that song it's just sort of a way of saying that the crow is well-praised by all his neighbours (and an opportunity for a great pun!). After reading your comment, I was kinda curious about whether or not it was referring to a more universalist point of view. I agree with topskanker though (actually had been thinking something to that effect, but their comment sums it up much better than I could). I have no clue whether or not Aaron believes in religious syncretism. There are some interesting (some might say "convincing") arguments for Christ-centred universalism as well, so perhaps that is his basis for it.

This may be way off, but I know that the early church monks (3rd through 5th centuries AD), the ones who fled into the desert to seek G-d's wisdom and strip themselves of their selves to embrace G-d, used the honorific titles Amma and Abba (for Mother and Father, respectively). [Aaron already made an allusion to the Desert Fathers with "why not be utterly changed into fire?", thanks to breathinghope's comment on "King Beetle", and Aaron himself seems to strive to be like the desert fathers) Knowing barely any Arabic whatsoever, I can't say if there's a connection there between the term meaning "mother" and what's being said here. Also, through a quick google search, "yassif" seems to be both a name and a place in different links. I think that "mother" is a good translation of Amma, though, and since there is no "ibn" connecting, I don't think it'd be Amma of Yassif. Also, since Aaron mentions in Timothy Hay that they've found a "better mom we call G-d", perhaps there's a connection there?

I think the "Sammy" from the live videos is referring to Samael, the angel of death in Jewish folklore.

I think the "dog" line is definitely a bit unexpected. However, this song reminds me so much of the Danielson Famile, and thus that line kind of makes me think of "Flesh Thang" and songs like that.

A few corrections:

we found the pot, that fit the lid no less now then when we were smarter did
our thoughts are like a tea bag on the saucer, all the flavor gone
[...]
we planted for the final frost, we once were found and now we're lost

Knowing Aaron a little from being friends with some of his old friends and talking to him after shows and stuff, I would say he's definitely not going overboard or deviating from his Christian faith. It's interesting to note the Sufi influence, but I don't think it's cause for concern; everything that is true is from G-d, and I would say that there is truth hidden in all religions (thought I should clarify that that doesn't mean "all roads lead to Rome"; I think though, that Aaron gets at a seldom-noticed aspect of worship in this song, though we can put into it what we bring to it, if that makes sense.)

I read an interview of him, I'll have to see if I can find the link, but in that interview he definitely sounded quite strong in his faith in Christ, but acknowledged that his beliefs are merely that, a belief, and that (as he says in one of his songs) he doesn't want his beliefs, he wants G-d. (which is a C.S. Lewis paraphrase, if I remember correctly)

So I think the use of more Arabic chanting on this album, the Beetle King song ("we didn't ask what it seemed like, we asked what it is"), along with its title (from a saying in a book of Sufi mystic thoughts), is a way of embracing the truth that surrounds while anchoring it to Christ. (like in songs like a Stick a Carrot and String, The Angel of Death, etc.), is a look at how all of us are trying to put into words something that is inherently beyond words. I think this album is best taken as a companion to Brother, Sister. While on that previous album he was still trying to grasp for words to hold on to to make G-d seem more tangible, on this one he is embracing the joy of G-d while caring less for the logistics. He is putting to music his statement from Dryness and the Rain: "Oh, what am I to think of what the writings of a thousand lifetimes could not contain if all the forest's trees were pens and all the oceans, ink?"

I was just listening to this song, and while I don't have an interpretation yet, the missing word in the first verse in 'affection'. So,

"started thinking about his daughter
affection her reaction of disdain"

can i tell solomon the things i've learned?
can i tell solomon the things i've learned?
i'm sorry, but it's none of my concern
it's time, it's time to go

I love this part. The book of Ecclesiastes, with its famous (infamous?) "Everything is meaningless", was written by Solomon, who asked G-d for wisdom.

Colour Revolt – Naked and Red Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is freaking amazing. That being said, I think it's about how we and the devil are so similar in our desire to be autonomous. I don't really get the liquor tree part, unless it's intoxicating to be in Eden? So, here goes...

First stanza-
Adam and Eve, in the garden, hiding from G-d.

Second stanza-
Tempter approaches, appeals to Eve's intellect and their similarities.

Third stanza-
Adam's gotten into the devil's mindset, and he's suffering the same as the devil... he knows he's naked and he's ashamed, but he's arrogantly proud because he knows he's in charge of himself.

Fourth stanza-
Sympathy for the devil and self? and a longing for Eden once more?

End-
Suffering outside Eden?
