The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics 18 years ago
I read what everyone else had to say, and have come to this interpretation... (ahem) I think the line "your back was still aligned" is referring to his girlfriend cheating as he walked in on them. And the sheets are growing grass from all the spilled seed or sweat, like someone else suggested. He wants to come down on her, but she's trying to start a new life somewhere else (you've got too much to wear
on your sleeves) and they're maintaining their friendship for the good of the group of friends they probably met through, otherwise he'd just never talk to her again. She brags about her new life and boyfriend, yet it's all just posing... he knows she's mean (you berate remember), feigning pain, giving him lustful glances (your ailing heart and your criminal eyes). And the twisted part is that he still loves her, because sometimes she was sweet, maybe she's bipolar, or something. I take the line "you've tested your metal of
doe's skin and petals" to mean a metal (it can be spelled two ways and still mean character, just mettle is the more common, I think he used the less common version to get the point across that she's cold) being her character and the doe's skin and petals to be a disguise for sweetness. The kissing the lipless part could be a metaphor for men, since they have no labia, or someone new who could be in a relationship with her without the same amount of intimacy.
It'll maybe mean something else tomorrow, though.
