Interesting how this song is dubbed anti-religious, which it really isn't. Judging from Phil's other works and various interviews it seems to be more against hive-minding. People just accepting what they are told, and not examining it for themselves. Religious leaders are definitely guilty of leading people like that, but as Phil says, the song is also about a tyrant (king/political leader) taking advantage of people's gullible, unquestioning nature.
It's not about Satan at all. |

From looking at the "Put the butterfly in the bill jar" line, I get this:
Chasing butterflies can be a metaphor for chasing your dreams, particularly if they seem impossible. Putting a butterfly in the "bill jar", could be equivalent to putting nothing but your time into chasing your dreams and having nothing to show for it, struggling therefore to pay your bills with such spent time. |

The REAL lyrics? The song is scatted. Randy himself has said he was pretty drunk, and just want into the recording booth and just went with it. So there are no actual lyrics, just random sounds. |

Personally, I think it relates to a person who blames everyone else for their problems, when really they know that they are the cause or root of everything they feel. |

Well, yeah, it COULD be about drugs. It could just be about addiction in general. I'm not dissing your interpretation, just voicing my own.
Just resigning themself to this addiction, realising theres nothing they can do to resolve the situation, nor do they particularly want to. |

It could simply be about someone who's simply introverted. Doesn't want to spend time with many people, having low self esteem and mentally torturing themself hence: "There's nothing you can do that I've not already done to myself."
Maybe, he ends up at a party/prom and is coerced into dancing with some girl he really likes ("Be nice, be nice to me..."), but is too proud ("Too cool...") to actually admit this.
Just an idea... |

This song, to me, is about someone in a relationship who knows they're having problems, but tries to hide form that fact, perhaps even to the point of intoxicating themselves with whatever. Until they finally give in, or their indulgence messes them up too far. |
