I think that "she knew the crumpled up promise of this broken down man" means that he's got some kind of baggage that he can't seem to get past. Even though she knows he loves her, she can't love him because she can tell that he's holding something back ("I gotta find more than what's happening with you"). At least, that's my take on it. This song is so amazing... |

Even if you don't bother to learn anything about Nikki, just reading the text of this song should give at least a *hint* that he was depressed: "I didn't speak to a single person today. I figured why should I ruin their fucking Christmas."..."One, I have no friends left" --He figures that no one cares about him anymore, and that he would ruin their day just by talking to them. "If I die, at least I leave a nice little suicide note of my life."..."I could have killed someone. Or better yet, myself." --Suicidal usually = depressed. I don't know how anyone could read this text and not come to that conclusion. |

I agree with loudchild. Pretty much every line in the song is meant literally. He thought he was living, but it was only after he actually died that he realized what living was. My favorite part is the line, "I was waiting for my hearse, but what came next was so much worse." He was actually dead, pretty much just waiting for his funeral, but he got dragged back and forced to face his problems. And realizing that he needed to change, and the struggle of changing itself, was worse than death for him. But thank goodness he did, because he's turned his life around and changed a lot of lives as a result. |
