Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
mjcmike1, you are an idiot. I can see the significance in the song for the President Bush case (see below), but it is extremely obvious that you are extremely uneducated as to American politics and have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

I don't think the song is about any one leader as it can apply to many of them. I'm gonna point out the stuff that could apply to President George W. Bush.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

Bush's approval ratings in 2002 were around 90%. Republicans were in control of Congress and Bush got everything done. Now with a Democratic Congress and 32% ratings (whether they're justified or not), he can't get much done.

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

"Feel the fear in my enemies' eyes" definitely translates to al-Qaeda and the Taliban right after 9/11. The terrorists over there envisioned a huge battle after 9/11, which was their dream. But when we came along and started bombing the hell out of them, they found the US was quite a formidable opponent.
"Now the old king is dead, long live the king" There's a comma to separate the conflicting views. Most Afghanis and Iraqis rejoiced as their terrible oppressors lost their power, but the terrorists proclaimed long live the king and continued to fight.

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
Missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

Not sure what this means, but "missionaries in a foreign field" points exactly to the support of the American troops in Iraq for George W. Bush. They all love him over there, and they are missionaries because we're doing a huge service to the Iraqis, but there isn't support back home for the war.

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become

Now this is the most direct reference to George W. Bush, and by this line alone one could assume the whole song's about him. "It was a wicked and wild wind / blew down the doors to let me in" --> September 11th, 2001. Bush was freshly inaugurated when 9/11 came, a truly wicked and wild wind. He was let in when he led this nation through 9/11 the best way possible and people loved him. Not sure what the rest of the stanza means.

Just my take :]

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 17 years ago
This song has a very deep meaning to me, because it is the absolute perfect description of the final moments of my first relationship with a very stubborn and immature girl -- of course in my case all the "he"s would be "she"s :P My take:

"Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right"

This is the beginning of a desperate talk to save the relationship. "As he goes left and you stay right" could be literal or a metaphor; he is trying to avoid her and the problems but she keeps pushing.

"Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came"

She is beginning to doubt why she even tries. Pretty self-explanatory.

"Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life"

It sounds like they have broken up and she is wondering what and when it all went wrong, and how she could have changed to outcome of things.

"Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence"

Pretty self-explanatory as well. She won't take his excuses.

"Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you"

She tells him all the problems, what she's been saying from the start, but she prays to God he'll finally get it this time.

"As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed"

She's giving him an ultimatum. "Drive until you lose the road" means a break up. "Or break with the ones you've followed" could mean he listens too much to his friends and they are interfering; kinda like she's saying "me or them."

"He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came"

He'll either say he's sorry and try to fix it, or he'll say he doesn't feel the same way as he did and he's not willing to change.

My take.

Sting – Sacred Love Lyrics 18 years ago
The refrain:
-"The spirit moves on the water" the miracle where Jesus walked on water.
-"She takes the shape of this heavenly daughter" A seemingly ordinary girl becomes the Mother of God -- Mary.
-"She's rising up like a river in flood" A river floods and can spread water to the surrounding land. I think this means that when Jesus was born, Mary was a river that spread the water of God over the world. Just what I think.
-"The Word got made into flesh and blood" duh, the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies that a Savior was coming.
-"The sky grew dark, and the earth she shook/Just like a prophecy in the Holy Book" Jesus' death was prophesied in the Bible.
The rest is self explanatory.

U2 – Window in the Skies Lyrics 18 years ago
It sounds to my a bit like the part "You let me in your heart/And out of my head" means that they stopped caring so much about where the person came from, how much money they have, etc. and just loved each other through the heart.
