| Amy Winehouse – Back To Black Lyrics

It clearly sounds like "blow" and "puff" but that's not important.
I have read all the commentary on this song, and cannot believe that NO ONE has mentioned the most obvious meaning -- that Amy, in the breakup from her white guy, is going "back to black." I mean, she grew up skanky and slutty in a London ghetto, using all the drugs in the world, addicted to rap, soul, jazz, r&B. Is it so hard for all you politically-correct adolescent (white) wankers to admit that she probably did a lot of black guys before she became recognized. Doesn't anybody understand that "Back to Black" is a neat lyrical turnaround of the old cliche, "Once you go black, you never go back." This is classic neat lyrical writing from one of the most talented lyricists around.
Similarly, in her "Me and Mr. Jones," she does a turnaround on the classic jazz tune, "Me and Mrs. Jones," and I probably don't need to point out (or maybe I do) that she references Brixton, which is probably the blackest of the London suburbs, and refers in this song to "...my best black jew."
Get real, gang. Quit listening to the publicity releases, and listen to the lyrics. |

Prediction: When Elton finally comes clean -- his autobiography or whatever -- this song will prove to be a collaboration, or paste-up, with Taupin having written the lyrics about blue jean babies, Jesus freaks, ballerinas, etc., and Elton having written the passionate paean to his precious little putz. The two choruses from "But oh how it feels so real..." to "... you had a busy day today. It just seems so right that he would comfort himself each evening after his intense performances stroking his little Willy (Tiny Dancer in my hand) and singing to it, lying in the hotel room on sheets of linen. Right? |

Floyd - I looked at your comments again, and need to say that it is not specifically about the Rockies -- the Rockies are only one stage in the westward expansion that has characterized the last couple of centuries. After the east, we spoiled Colorado, etc., and then moved on to California, ruined that, and are now messing up Hawaii. After that, there is no more "west." The Asians are busy spoiling that. |

Floyd -- Good work, but a little overkill. The "hazy sun" is smog -- have you ever sat on a deck overlooking the Pacific in Malibu and watched the sun set?
As great as this song is, I appreciate how some are turned off by the typical Henley angry negativity. For a more enthusiastic view of "Manifest Destiny" (look it up) listen to Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy." |

This is one of a handful of songs where Don Henley lets his anger get out of control, and it kind of spoils the music. Despite this, it is clever, and Henley is one of my all-time favorite songwriters (when he's more balanced). |
