Wilco – Summer Teeth Lyrics 17 years ago
"Like a cloud his fingers explode"

I think the first line is just talking about typing fast in a fit of inspiration.

"On the typewriter ribbon, the shadow grows"
This refers to the long hours he spends writing or the black smudges from deleting so many times -- which could be repeatedly making mistakes while feverishly typing to try to get all of the ideas on paper before you forget them.

"His heart's in a bowl behind the bank."

He can't afford to write he wants to write, because he has to write for money.

"And every evening when he get home
To make his supper and eat it alone
His black shirt cries
While his shoes get cold"

He lives a lonely life. His black shirt crying is probably him sweating in a house without A/C.

"One summer, a suicide
Another autumn, a travelers guide"

Summer - when things are going good, he has interesting articles to write.
Autumn - when things are going as well, he has to write things he has no real interest in to pay the bills.

"He hits snooze twice before he dies"

Everyone who has ever worked a shit-job they hate knows this feeling. He hits snooze twice, before he has to get up to do the work he hates.

"He feels lucky to have you here
In his kitchen, in your chair
Sometimes he forgets that you're even there"

He's glad the other person (Probably wife) is there and regrets taking her for granted.

Wilco – Candy Floss Lyrics 17 years ago
"I'm the boy that looks excited
I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart"

Probably in reference to the sometimes over-emotional and sensitive nature of poets/artists.

"Candy floss, I lie to myself
I'm the boy that eats his heart out"

Self explanatory, but I think it's easy to become delusional about the way things really are in relationships.

"Candy floss and she's a safe-cracker
She kissed me first and then broke in"

He was really guarded.

"We slip and slide on the stay-together land mine
I make my mind up to never be myself
And every time I fake around
I live my life for someone else"

Repeatedly trying to make it work with someone and wondering how long it's really going to last. He feels he can't be himself around her anymore. He probably just pretends to be happy and keeps all the dark stuff hidden.

"I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk cause
(I'm in the way)

I'm the boy with the poetry power
I'm the boy, smells like flowers"

Seems like his former lover has found someone new and he feels he's the better man and hopes she sees that and comes around.

Wilco – Can't Stand It Lyrics 17 years ago
"No loves as random as God's love." is a true statement, through the eyes of the bitter. It could be that he feels like a lot of good things happen for him and God is looking out for him, then he'll fall on hard times and wonder where God is to help him -- feeling like God's love is inconsistent and random. It could also mean that it seems like God blesses certain people endlessly, while leaving others to poverty, starvation, death etc.

Wilco – We're Just Friends Lyrics 18 years ago
It seems like whenever a woman breaks it off with a man, they still want to be just friends. When the man ends up staying friends, they usually want more -- a reconciliation of the relationship.

He regrets all the ways he fucked up in the relationship and is trying to tell her it won't be like last time -- I'm different now. I promise we're just friends though, if that's the only way I can have you, I'll take what I can get.

Wilco – How To Fight Loneliness Lyrics 18 years ago
Given that this CD was made during the time where Tweedy was having a lot of marital troubles: I believe it refers to the loneliness associated with a hard break-up -- one in which you really loved the other person.

You feel like you can't talk to anyone about it, because they've heard the story 1,000 times. So you walk around trying to hide it, but it's always there. You lie when people asks how you are, "I'm good, man." because again, no one wants to hear it. You smile when you talk to people and laugh at all their shitty jokes, but as soon as their back is turned, you're back to that feeling.

The "smoke" dampens every possible positive emotion that could happen. In the post-break-up loneliness/bitterness it feels like you can't enjoy anything.

You can't get out of that feeling. So you start drinking and getting fucked up to make it go away, but it's always temporary and never really fixes anything.
