| Oh. NOW I understand what you're saying. Never mind what I said :) | |

| It's not actually by DCFC, it's a Ben Gibbard solo song from his album 'Former Lives'. | |

| I'm pretty sure he means it literally, but not in reference to suicide. He's clearly having an argument with the girl (likely his former wife, Zooey Deschanel), and flings himself out of the car, injuring himself in the process. | |

| Yeah I'm pretty sure it is. It's on his album "Former Lives". | |

| I love this song too. It's so strangely emotive, I can definitely relate. | |

Obviously I don't know how to use songmeanings :P I think you're all overanalysing.. my take on the song was that he meant it in a social sense. "I used to rule the world.." he was talking about becoming a superficial person, becoming rich and famous, and that heedy sense of power that came with it. "there was never an honest word.." and "Now in the morning I sleep alone", he realises that the people he thought weren't really his friends, and that he was basing his self-worth on something that was ultimately fickle and meaningless, "And I realised that my castles stand upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand" The christian references just kind of add to the metaphor, and also reinforce that general feeling of the insubstantiality of the things he used to value, and the need to return to the meaningful. |

| The Shins – New Slang Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Just to chip in here. "New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries" I think what 'New Slang' means is swear words. The protagonist of this song has been driven to such bitter cynicism and misogyny by the world that he hopes that bakers will "all cut their thumbs, and bleed into their buns", and when he sees dirt in his fries it just adds to his misery and all he can do is utter "new slang". |

Oh - Just read that article. I think my interpretation fits in with it - he says "Nothing could be further from the truth. I didn't go out with her at all. I mean, a few nights - she's a nice girl - I suppose I had a fling" |

I don't think it's a prostitute, it sounds more like a fuck buddy or a friends with benefits. If she was a prostitute I don't think "she only goes around, round, round" would carry as much weight. And I don't think he is in love with her - when he says "I'd like to say, that I was on your mind\ So I phone you at ten past three, in the afternoon\ It's evening for you, and another bare hotel room" he means that he's hoping she is sitting in an empty bedroom feeling horny for him. So they're calling each other up so they can meet up. Again, he wouldn't expect a prostitute to be thinking about him. I don't know what the Jackie Big Tits reference means though, I haven't seen that movie. |

That all makes sense, but what does he mean when he says " I don't know if he Wants my soul or my Cash flow, I s'pose I don't know " |

Just something to add to the great comments that are already here. Expanding on the idea of the "meaningless existence" of daily life, the chorus "It's just a dream he keeps having And it doesn't seem to mean anything And it doesn't seem to mean anything" can also be taken to be a reference to life itself as a meaningless dream. Tweedy repeats this a lot and this was my first impression upon listening to the song. |

So what does this song really mean..? I don't think I really subscribe to anything that's been said so far... What does "I'd love to turn you on", the jarring sounds in the middle of the song, and the repeat at the end mean? Or is it all just gibberish.. |

| The Beatles – Happiness Is a Warm Gun Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I picked up a LOT of sexual innuendo, call me perverted but here's what I see - gun = phallic symbol, warm gun = sex "The man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors On his hobnail boots Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy Working overtime" = pervert masturbating trigger = clitoris, or I think it might refer to masturbation where 'you' refers to the penis. I'm not sure what the stuff in between means though. |
