Gordon Lightfoot – Sundown Lyrics 17 years ago
I almost preferred TheToner's allegorical interpretation of Mr. Lightfoot's alchoholism. But I can't reconcile the notion of the threat. (sundown you better take care). Who is he warning? The bottle? Perhaps the lyric is more literal than metaphorical. See some of his other lyrics, he's not real complicated. Or maybe that's just me. Not complicated.

Roger Miller – King Of The Road Lyrics 17 years ago
The king is a hobo begging handouts and smoking castoff cigars (stogies) to quiet his cigarette craving. He's a thief sneaking into unlocked buildings or sleeping in a flophouse room when he can manage to work for two hours sweeping, earning 50 cents to pay for the filthy room. At least the mattress may not be infested with fleas since no pets are allowed. But watch out for the crabs and bedbugs.
Ah the romance and adventure of the open road.

Roger Miller – Chug-A-Lug Lyrics 17 years ago
When I was a boy my dad had this song on vinyl and played it often. Later, when I was fourteen my bro-in-law sold me a bottle of wine his grandfather had made. Two friends from school and I drank almost all then I hid the remainder in my closet. One of the boys got sick and confessed to his mom who then called my mom. Of course I denied any and all knowledge. But was busted when my closet was searched. I learned two lessons that day. Parents can be quite hipocritical and always finish your drink. Chug-a-lug!

ZZ Top – I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is obviously about white people. White trash with money, to be specific. Maybe an iconic rock star from Texas who is known nationwide for his multi platinum albums. He's bad. He's nationwide.

Willie Nelson – Whiskey River Lyrics 17 years ago
Great instrumental showcase number. The signature concert song for Willie and Family.
Eight lines and just under sixty words; but each word so loaded with imagery and emotion.
It's powerful poetry, even if it is just about gettin' drunk. Or is it?

Willie Nelson – Red Headed Stranger Lyrics 17 years ago
I long for that simpler time... when a man with a gun and a horse could lay to waste his faint hearted sweetheart and her lover in a tavern, then ride to another town and kill a yellow haired whore, and folks would wait till tomorrow when maybe he'll ride on again.
Ahhh The good ol' days.

Tennessee Ernie Ford – Sixteen Tons Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about the coal mining indeed. Though laborers in any field can identify with the downtrodden existance of which mister Travis refers; while taking pride in the power the labor gives his body.
Debt bondage is alive and well.

"Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the Mastercard Gold."

Steely Dan – Do It Again Lyrics 18 years ago
Consider this, Do It Again could refer to reincarnation. In the first verse Jack slays the man who stole his water, and is hanged. "And they put you on the street", is a metaphor for his reincarnation to another life; in the second verse, he again misbehaves, dying on his knees. In the third verse he is reincarnated again and being menaced by casino security, likely bound for a shallow grave in the desert. Wheel turning round and round. Any thoughts?

Gordon Lightfoot – Sundown Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is an expression of jealous rage flavored with helpless desire. The singer paints a picture of his desirable but uncommitted lover, who sends mixed messages, "by not always saying what she really means". The singer threatens his unknown faceless rival, "Sundown" with some vague undefined violence, that he "better take care" if he attempts to visit the singer's faithless lover by sneaking up the back stair. Presumably while the singer is away. He finishes by lamenting that though he is unhappy in his love affair he is powerless to effect a change.
