It speaks to me about a basic faith in the unpredictability of life. You do what you can with what you get, and if you just take it all as it comes -- without too much in the way of judgment or expectation -- there's much to celebrate, and little to regret. Besides, who knows how much worse it would have been if you'd done things differently? |

It sounds like a sad situation. She's obviously not happy in the relationship, and he has to leave before she and the relationship are completely destroyed. He clearly cares deeply for her, and still has hope that they can be reconciled after a break. (This may well be based on Tom's own relationship with his wife, which went through a bit of a rocky patch around that time but which eventually came back together.) |

Like most guys, he feels completely unworthy of her love, but of course her hanging around still strokes his ego, so he'll just let her go on lying to him, no matter how much he knows (believes) it is hurting her. Completely self-centred, stereotypical male angst, with the beautifully understated humour typical in 54-40's lyrics. (e.g. "And it can also go the other way.")
I've often wondered if the juxtaposition of the lines "That I'm confused all the time" and "She lies to me" are intended to be two separate thoughts or two clauses in a single sentence. Is he confused all the time, or only when she lies to him? |

Songs are interesting in how they can convey a completely different meaning than the author intended. Although I know this isn't the case, this could easily be a song about a deep spiritual longing and an acknowledgement of the fear of committing to such. |
