Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets Lyrics 13 years ago
Now You may think I'm crazy, hell I do, but it struck me that this song is about the environment. About what we are doing to it. Go ahead, look at the lyrics. Look at the Freaking name of the song. Culture is so sexually orientated that we take it as a given that 'sheets' are referring to bed sheets, when they could easily be referring to paper sheets.

I think of Dante's personification of Love when I listen to this song, and that love is more poignant and respectable than god.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Your Funeral, My Trial Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is probably one of the hardest to read and understand, but I think all of the words elude to something hanging over it. The first two lines are exempt as they are merely an admission, but night time seems to be an extended metaphor for sexual relations, no with just one woman, but a string of relationships which began with him being 'lured' - note this word gives a certain connotation that he was helpless, like the futility of trying to stop night time from coming after day. The phases of the moon also come into play to support the metaphor to show the passing of time, bauble moon could only be a full moon, a fang moon could only represent represent a gibbon moon. Again the cycle of the moon, rotation of stars and shadows are impossible to influence, this man's crooked mile would seem to be these relationships which took his innocence (shamed a child) and I think maybe he considers himself a whore for all of these bad relationships, but ultimatly he is able to dismiss each one (or they dismiss him) and are dead to him, but he must carry on and continue to judge himself in retrospect over the lovers he has chosen (your funeral, my trial).

The Smashing Pumpkins – Soot and Stars Lyrics 14 years ago
but 'A morose foretold' made sense to me though. moroseness is practically melancholia, if not exactly. 'A friend called Kneel' just seems to suit the stanza as it is talking about the heart being pointed up "In exaltation of heaven" and the spirit being pointed down "in the act of damning hell" I can't swear to this as this just something I picked up off of the exorcist prequel about the designs of angels in churches. 'His voice the siren of greek mythology' does have a strange but relevant meaning. if this is billy talking about god, then he has some very complex feelings surrounding god's designs, and why they seem to leave billy in shit. Everyone has those feelings of having to ask why certain stuff had to happen, 'Spells of Esmeralda' the beauty of Notre dame? why would she be there? oh wait, its because she's a walking example of how beauty corrupts the beholders. Note here the start of the song, and the reason mr Marx got dragged into this song, 'Decisions made, idea's mine, but the inspiration not' this is the old debate of pre-determinism, are the choices you make your own? Well if not, which seems to be the case in this song, the systems put in place for governing it all could be viewed as beautiful synchrony, anyone who views it in hindsight can see purpose and maybe even reason for what happened, but some people can be broken hearted in considering that GOD decided that various different tortures would be necessary, but seeing that denial of his wisdom would achieve nothing and leave us 'ghosts in a machine' Absence of purpose or will. We carry on regardless, but always wondering while we shuffle closer to death. Now you gonna have to take a leap with me on this next one, I could be COMPLETELY WRONG here, but I thought he says 'Bearing without child' instead of 'Barren without child' Which kinda represents billy as learning something wiser and carrying it as though it had the importance of a child. And dying as a child, which one person here thinks is a sense of helplessness, I personally thought was a refusal to give up your innocence and/or naivety in belief before you die. Ultimately the song leaves you with billy's current state after being dragged through those aforementioned events, 'Soot in my hair' I think is a reference to St Angela Merici, who dyed her hair with soot and water so she would not appear attractive to anyone, thus avoiding temptations of the flesh. 'Stars in my hand' as I recall this appears in Revelations and it is a symbol of the Christ, not to say Billy thinks he's Jesus, but that he is enlightened by what he's been through...Even if its left him crestfallen (sorry, couldn't resist). The rest of the song I think is just about the want to be free from a variety of binds. Good song, lovely tune, kudos Mr Corgan.

Editors – Papillon Lyrics 14 years ago
Its about perseverance though connection. Kinda 'We're in this together' sorta thing. the papillon story is important because it was two men who endured together though given the final chance of extremely risky escape papillon's friend (dega) doesn't go with him. the sleep twitch is the sense of falling and suddenly being caught or landing, it freaks you out a little, but the sense in which it is used I think 'it' is the need to know, the want for a better answer to life. and the choking verse is about the fact that whomever the singer is talking about clearly dislikes their life and hides it well, and the chance of finding something better brutally keeps them quiet, because the chance is granted by the life they hate. All put together its a brilliant and beautiful song about being left behind by the love of your life. (Now YOU'RE born born get old and die here, well that quite enough for ME dear.)Now the singer is left thinking 'What if...?'

The Killers – Losing Touch Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it should be roanin' instead of roman.
It came across my mind, for some odd reason, that this song is about an indian man, called 'Losing Touch' who saw his friends come back after gambling in las vegas having lost everything.
Don't ask why, it just made sense at the time.

I think Last years man is actually god. Its very rare to find songs like this, and i think we all should make some effort to listen to them before we forget the concept of artistic merit.

The Veils – Vicious Traditions Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, totally about stalin. although i did notice one thing that explains the title. in the first verse, on the grave it says "Here lies joseph" in the third verse it says "here lies our son joseph" which significantly suggests that the parents of stalin are also involved, but particularly his father. it is apparently considered that why stalin was so brutal as a leader was because his father used to beat him brutally. in which case surely brutality is a "Vicious Tradition" in every sense of those two words, and its these failures of our parents that cause our failures in life is what the song is about.
and of course its up to us to break the chain and fight back our stupid tendencies

The Veils – Vicious Traditions Lyrics 17 years ago
Feelings-wise, I totally agree with t1nkerb3ll, i listened to this song today in the morning, it stayed in my head for the entire day, by the end of today i had been through a dark mood, an angry mood and a rushed mood, which ultimatly led to the event of having an agrument with my (extremly arrogant and offensive) boss, and maybe lost my job for no particular cause...and for some reason, i'm glad i confronted her.
i could swear that this song was feeding this hatred of being made to feel stupid.
