I do like this 'murder' idea, and I think it's probably the most accurate. The way always took it, though, was that a man had lost his wife and 'gone off the rails', carving his name into the church and then leaving his children by the tavern, telling them he was going to drown himself, before stumbling to his wife's grave and crying himself to sleep. Meanwhile, the people in the village (I'm assuming it's a village) gather up a search party to look for the missing man, with the "begging choir" literally being a group of beggars outside the tavern. They find him by the grave, and the wife's angel appears to the search party, and explains to the captain's man why the husband has done this. that's my take anyway :) |
