Tori Amos – Maybe California Lyrics 16 years ago
on NPR tori said this song was the result of talking to women who were sane and not crazy, but had considered suicide. She said that these women, married women, as a result of their husband losing a job, and trouble in the marriage, and the fact that the husbands self worth was suffering, that they thought the only solution to all that pain and suffering was to as tori put it "take themselves out of the picture", or kill themselves. I am curious as to if this is modern day women, she is talking about, or women of the past?

Radiohead – Bodysnatchers Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is essentially a synthesis on what modern living is and what it does to people. From the "Has the light gone out for you" line until the end, the song is one of the best discussions of modern day society, from a sociopolitical perspective that has come out in the last few years, maybe in the last 10 to 15 years.

100 years from now, assuming the earth is still around, and people want to understand, "what did humans at the turn of the century, the turn of this century, what did they think, and feel, and how did modernity and society effect them?" They only need listen to Radiohead's entire catalogue or this song from the aforementioned "light" stanza to the end.

We need bands like Rage Against the Machine, who are blunt, and forceful and are literally saying "lets start the revolution tonight" in every lyric and song. But just as important are bands like Radiohead. Who are one of the most political bands in history no doubt, but will most likely not be remembered as that. Their lyrics arent militant or overtly political. They arent saying "down with Bush and the system" in every lyric. Its more a feeling. The music itself is political. It creates a foreboding sense of doom, of what it feels like to be a citizen in a kafkaesque modern society. One doesnt even have to hear the song "The Gloaming" to get the feeling they are discribing something sad and horrific.

This song is brilliant in its discussion on society. Maybe this is what the man was talking about in the Just video. Maybe this is why he and the rest of them laid down. This idea that the light went out for him.

Bruce Springsteen – Racing in the Street Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is about how going to a job that you hate, affects your life. The imagery in this song is unreal. Especially when he talks about his girlfriend. He comes home and his girlfriend is essentially dying inside. She's crying. The house is dark.

Its almost like these two have given up on life. For Bruce the only salvation is racing in the street. Work is hell, and then the only saving grace is him washing up and racing.

This song describes something that is familiar to Bruce, as many songs in his catalogue deal with it. People who are desperate to change, to leave, to get out. The feeling you are going to die if you dont.

Nick Drake – Place To Be Lyrics 17 years ago
oneirou, heres my response

My opinion of the song is that its about a person who is lost. who doesnt know who they are. or their purpose. They feel like the world is overwhelming and scary and messed up.

Obviously no one knows what was going on in nicks head when he wrote this song, but I think thats pretty close to an accurate description, and it fits in my opinion, partly because when I first heard it, it helped me out expressing my own feelings about these issues. What I was going through and all that.

He saw the truth hanging from the door, as in when he was young, he didnt have to worry about war, death, finding himself, violence, jobs, and everything else that living in modern society entails. the truth hanging from the door could symbolize anything really, but I think its the loss of innocence. When you are little, the war in Iraq maybe wouldnt even register with you. And why should it? But if you are an aware astute 20 year old now, the war in Iraq may be much more personal.

Anyone see the final season of the Sopranos where AJ sort of goes through a crisis. That to me is an example of someone who notices the truth hanging from the door.

I dont think he used "green" to talk about inexperience. Green, Greener than the hill. To me when I listen to the song, or this verse, I picture a meadow, a field, where its a utopia. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is bad. The outside world doesnt exist. War, violence, hate, pollution, etc... doesnt exist. Again, I feel he is painting a picture of himself, someone who at one time didnt have to worry about adult matters, could just walk and sleep in a field all day, but now has other things that weigh on his mind and conscience.

Couldnt he also be weak in a need to find himself. After all the song is titled Place to Be, so again, the idea of a song about the pains of growing older, and the need to find himself, I think pretty clearly reverberate heavily on this song.

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 17 years ago
I dont really get the whole "I love you mom" or a loveletter to mommy vibe you all seem to be getting.

Although this song is life affirming, I dont really consider it a love song or a happy song. Its meloncholy and stark, and powerful people!

Sam isnt writing love sentiments to his mommy. He is expressing in a very real and heart felt manner, how it feels to grow up. Boy With a Coin explores similar territory. Check out Stand By Me, Thirteen, and Ballad of Jack and Rose or the final season of the Sopranos with an eye on AJ. Thats growing up. This song falls into that same genre and tradition.

I see two people who disagree and arent on good terms. The boy is growing up and its painful, but he isnt the one who needs cheering up. Its the mom who doesnt understand.

The imagery in this song is mindblowing. The line about the pups in the pantry...holy crap. Only a few lines and it expresses so much.

lines like Mother forget me
Now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to, are expressing the painful and harsh realities of growing up in todays society. kids lose innocence to soon and are forced to become adults too soon.

Nirvana – Something in the Way Lyrics 17 years ago
Its trite, this discussion is. Who cares if he did or didnt sleep under a bridge. You have some people saying he did, others, he didnt.

Whats more important is the words and feelings conveyed. It plays like it was recorded under a bridge. It gives off that feeling, reguardless of what actually happened,

And has anyone here bothered to get to the bottom of the most important part of the song? The title and chorus? What does it mean? What is the something in the way kurt is talking about?

best song ever written. period. never heard a better one.

this is THE song about growing up, the pains of that experience, of longing, of knlwing the world is horribly off kilter and that you feel like you cant do anything to stop it.
