Florence + the Machine – Hurricane Drunk Lyrics 16 years ago
It's not

"No home,
I don't want shelter,
No calm,
Nothing to keep me from the storm,
And you can't save me now,
I'm in the grip of a hurricane,
It's gonna blow us all away."

It is

"No home,
I don't want shelter.
No calm,
Nothing to keep me from the storm,
and you can't HOLD ME DOWN.
'Cause I belong to the hurricane,
It's gonna blow this all away."

HIM – Vampire Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
I suppose this is how I see it, based off of personal experiences. I think it is about,
a corrupted soul who just wanted to be loved.

Deftones – Change (In the House of Flies) Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, and I forgot to add that flies are also a symbol of 'Beelzebub' or Lucifer as some might call him. Isn't he known for his evil, temptations and all out nastiness? Hence where the 'evil everyone is capable of 'theory came along. This is what three years of analyzing books does to you.

Deftones – Change (In the House of Flies) Lyrics 17 years ago
I personally believe this is about a man who watched a girl change before his eyes. That perhaps, he even once loved her but he let her change while he watched her and now regrets what he has done.

“I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire”

Perhaps before she was something once pleasant and beautiful, but she turned into a ‘fly’ which is a symbolism for the evil/bad that each human is capable of. Basically she embraced this ‘evil’ within her and became a ‘fly’. A fly not only represents the evil which we are capable of but something ugly and incessant. Try to personify the fly into a ‘human-sense’, you will get the image of it.
He then ‘looked away’, he could not face the change in her, he didn’t want to admit the change was real and basically he was a by-stander who did nothing. Because he looked away, turning the ‘other cheek’ and she was “on fire”. Meaning she was self-destructing, or “spontaneous combustion”. She was destroying herself by embracing the “fly” within her, all because he turned the other cheek.

“I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
And you feel so alive
I've watched you change”

Here, he says again that he watched the change from something beautiful to something ugly. Then he mentions that “It’s like you never had wings”. The term ‘wings’ can be associated with many different things, such as birds which represent, freedom and speed. It could also be associated with angels, symbolizing purity, goodness and innocence. Then there are the with butterflies, dragonflies, fairies, mythological winged creatures, which represent a magical element to the symbolism of wings. I choose that the symbolism behind the word ‘wings’ in this song is that of angels. So therefore it was as if she was never innocent, never pure or goodly. He watched her changed so much that it is near impossible to remember what she used to be.

“I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed”

In this stanza, he claims that he “took you home”, basically when one takes someone home, they wish to either help/nurse it back to health or rather the fact that a person’s home is a personal, close thing to them. He basically says that he took her in, brought her close to him, under his wing. As if he was going to befriend and love her, instead he set her on the “glass”. Glass is a rather precarious and fragile thing, if you set someone on glass, it is not going to be very stable is it? He made her life very unstable nor ‘safe’ for her. Here he spurred on the ‘change’ that was growing within her and transforming her.
He then pulled of those “wings” of purity, goodness and innocence was mentioned afore.
Though the term ‘wings’ in this stanza is more along the lines of innocence. He basically stripped her of whatever naivety and innocence she had left and basically thought it was funny and amusing. It was funny to see someone who became something she is not in pain. As if what he did was justified by her change.

“I watched a change in you
It's like you never had words
Now you feel so alive
I watched you change”

The line “it’s like you never had words”, the symbolism for ‘words’ in this stanza is that words is how we express ourselves with emotions and such. Here he claims that it is like she never had ‘emotions’, no feeling or compassion. She was -numb-, it was as if she could never feel anything in the first place, he can’t look past the ‘lethargic-ness’ she feels now. Then he says “now you feel so alive”. Basically she thinks the change is better for her, that she now saw how naiveté and stupid she was and think she is now smarter because of the change. Now she won’t be as stupid as she was before when she had innocence. He continued watched her change from something beautiful to something ugly.

I look at the cross
And I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away

Here he looks at the ‘cross’ she is set upon. Crosses have many symbols as well, though the big main one is ‘sacrifice’, or ‘tortuous execution’. He says that he has ‘tortured’ her in a sense, and that he ‘sacrificed’ her for his own amusement. Not being able to stand what he has done to her, he looked away and turned the other cheek. He then givers her the “gun”, guns are rather powerful and destructive weapons that can also be used in defense. He gave her something, perhaps some sort of ‘hope’ to break whatever ties she has to him that are harming her. He gives her a means to defend herself and commands her to “blow me away”, to basically let go of him so that he can let go of her and they both can move on with their lives and so that he would not hurt her anymore.

“I watched a change in you
It's like you never had words ,
Now you feel so alive
I've watched you change
And you feel alive
You feel alive (2x)
I've watched you change”

He is a by-stander, watching her change and doing nothing about it. It is as if she cannot feel anymore, yet she feels better for it. As if she is protected by this “numbness”.
While he just stood by and watched her.

This is basically how I interpret the song, a man who watched a woman change, he hurt and used her and he did nothing to help her.

Vertical Horizon – Everything You Want Lyrics 18 years ago
Near the beginning, the song goes,

You never could get it
Unless you were fed it
Now you're here
And you don't know why

But under skinned knees and the skidmarks
Past the places where you used to learn
You howl and listen
Listen and wait for me
Echos of angels that won't return

To me, this means,

You could never get things,
Unless they were given to you
But now you are with me
And you don’t know why

Under your wounds and blemishes
Past your childhood memories
You complain/cry and you listen to my advice
Just listen to what I have to say and wait for me/take a chance in us.
This is your last chance, it won’t return. I can’t wait any longer.

Basically here he says that you had to have things given to you, but here you are with me now and you don’t know why but I do. Under your tough exterior and wounds, past the memories of us when we were young when you complained/cry and I would give you sage advice. But when you listen this time, please just wait for what else I have to say.
This is your last chance and my last opportunity to say this. I won’t be able to wait for you anymore, because if I do then I’ll miss out on the good things.

The next part of the lyrics,

He's everything you want
He's everything you need
He's everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
He says all the right things
At exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you
And you don't know why

He speaks in third person to try and convince himself he is everything she needs, that he is everything she wants in a guy and he loves her.

“He’s everything inside of you that you wish you could be” means, He (I) am the good part of you that you are but do not notice, I am the good boyfriend, the loyal, kind and caring friend. Through this stanza he tells himself that he is everything for her but wonders why he doesn’t mean the same to her as she means to him. He loves her as in he wants to be with her, but she doesn’t love him back that way.

During this part,

Waiting for someone to put you together
Waiting for someone to push you away
There's always another
Wound to discover
There's always something more you wish he'd say

He tells her that he knows that

She is waiting for someone to put back the pieces of her broken heart
But all you are really doing is opening yourself up to more hurt
There is always more pain to come
You get even more hurt
You wish he would tell you the words but he doesn’t

He sings of her hurt and her search for love and how it always turns out bad, that the guy would never say the words to enchant her, never say “I love you” or something like that.

The next part which goes a little something like this,

But you'll just sit tight
And watch it unwind
It's only what you're asking for
And you'll be just fine
With all of your time
It's only what you're waiting for

Out of the island
Into the highway
Past the places where you might have turned
You never did notice
You still hide away
Anger of angels that won't return

It means,

You will just sit back,
Watch everything go down the drain
It is what you expected anyways
You think you will be fine
and that time heals all
It’s what you expected anyways

Out of isolation/seclusion
Onto the busy road of life
Past the good things in life you might have stopped to try
You never noticed something that was right in front of you (me)
You still hide from that fact, afraid.
My anger that you will not see me in this light will soon be gone.

It means here that, you won’t even try anymore because it is what you excpect in a relationship, you think you could move on and try again and that everything will be alright, but it won’t. You tried to socialize, find the one. But this made you blidn to all the good things that are here and still waiting for you. You hide from the pain because you are still afraid, my “lover’s scorn” won’t be here for you anymore.

The last part is the break through part when he sings,

I am everything you want
I am everything you need
I am everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
I say all the right things
At exactly the right time
But I mean nothing to you
And I don't know why

Because here is has stopped trying to convince himself that he is everything she wanted because now he KNOWS that he is everything she wants, but now he is trying to convince her and make her see that he won’t be like the other relationships she had. He would be better, he would love her unconditionally. Here in this part of the song he has more confidence and will now confront her with these statements and questions and open up her eyes and make her see his love for her.

It is a very beautiful song and its funny because most girls like the one in this song do have a guy friend who is exactly like the guy in this song. They would do anything for her but she just won’t see it. They are everything these girls want but they are too busy searching for someone that they are blind.

I’m just one of those exceptions, I have one close guy friend but he is definitely not interested in me and my other guy friends are not close and they don’t like me like that either. Plus they pick on me all the time.

Still, it is a beautiful song.
