interesting interpretation of the song by members "for your entertainment and adorabell" I think you are right. I hadn't thought of that..yes, I agree that it is a song with double meaning and interpretation which are always more interesting and a creativeinteresting interpretation of the song by members "for your entertainment and adorabell" I hadn't thought of that..yes, I agree that it is a song with double mean. The obvious one is being aobut kinky, rough, s&m type sex, but it has a 2nd meaning talking about that very performance on the AMC show--his first more public debut after idol where many last saw him to show a side of him he couldn't on idol--a different side of him--more who he feels he really is. Rated 0 I think the I'm holding on your rope got me ten feet off the ground refers to the connection/tie between them and that first when it was good, he felt ten high off the ground in happiness..walking on air..head over heels in love..up in the clouds so to speak..very up. By the end of the song/relationship the same tie (rope) to this girl is now referring to literally to her connection to him being ten feet off the air committing suicide. First the love burned red hot and intense, now it is the same intensity but full of sorrow turned blue. Symbolizing the depression over her but also the cold fact that he is turning blue due to death. He needs her like a heart needs a beat and without her, his heart stops beating (by his own hand). She has happened upon his now dead body but his spirit is still there and sees and hears her reaction.. Her reaction to finding him dead and realizing what she has done and what it lead him too has her apologizing and saying I'm so sorry forgive me etc repeatedly and he is hearing what she is saying now, but he can't make a sound (respond) as he is dead now. As his spirit hears her apologizing and professing her love which is now too late, he says she apologizes (now in death) the way an angel would..so sweetly..like the person he once thought she was when he fell in love with her. He is saying he is afraid that, regardless of if it is sincere or not, it is still too late. She tells him so needs him now in retrospect, but too late, of course, and then she desperately cut the rope down hoping to revive him. He mentions how she never expected this and thought an I'm sorry would suffice like it had in the past when he took her back but this time, he killed himself first and it is too late for her to say I am sorry now. I think he is saying if he could now he would take another shot with her but it is, unfortunately, too late as he is dead and can't return to see if she now finally means what she is saying. I do believe it is about a man who killed himself over what she did to him as there are too many references to being dead...hearing but can't respond, turning blue, cut me down, and even though her apology is perfect it does no good as it came too late and the rope hanging ten feet off the ground. |

I feel most of his songs very personal and involve his life, history. angst, story, feelings and thoughts .they are a way he uses as therapy for him to release his feelings and thoughts and many of his songs seem to be about his mom (and other older family/friends ) and interestingly, he confirmed this about his mom being the inspiration for many of his songs on the Fort Worth radio interview. But this one is about a girlfriend/lover-- most probably L...y, his most recent one that I am aware of (or a past girlfriend) She is likely saying to him, I gave you everything I had..my body, my mind, love, sweetness, money when he had none and from her point of view all she had and it was not enough for him so she felt forced to leave him and stood "suitcase in hand". this is what she says to him during arguments..I gave you everything..how can you did this to me, Josiah? Finally, she feels forced to leave as he is not present a lot when with her or from her. She breaks it off finally.. He became very angry at this and ripped up her letters which now seemed false to him all the love she claimed she had for him (and may well of had form her POV)..he will never read them and weep anymore..he is done.. This is because she, from his point of view, failed him just like all the others before her..he had believed she was different... It is clear from his other songs that he feels noone gets him and his thirst to get where he wants to go and to his goals and dreams in a hurry no matter what..his family and many do not understand..they want him to wait and live the normal life..get a degree, a stable job, settle down and to him that is torture if he does not have what he wants and must have..without it he feels his reason for living, his very soul will be extinguished and he looked to her to be different and to support him in this even if it hurts her, even if he leaves her to pursue it and does what he feels he must do to achieve it. He is saying to this lover, I don't need things like your mind, your body, your money, the warm feelings when I am with you but what i really need from you is to understand my dreams, my quest, how it is everything to me; for you to support me in the midst of my feeling no one else does, that when all make fun of me and think I am crazy, you are there are me as a support believing in me .. this I needed above all, you would not give me as you sought to hold me here, to Morristown, to you, to the normal type of relationship that is just not enough for a man like me. She apparently in her need for the normal life and love..home, kids, family,. picket fenced house was not able to support him leaving and seeking his fortune and thus he tells her. go..I can find what you are offering anywhere....a body, mind, money, warm glow, they are all easy to find as many fish are in the sea,,,what I need is someone who understands my soul, my all, and is willing to do everything (even at pain to themselves) to support me.. to make my dreams her dreams to support me in this that noone else understands and this lack from you is the ultimate betrayal for me so your words of love and letters mean nothing to me but pain.. I will have what I must have as it is like water and air to me--vital to my existence... He does have regrets though and though it is easy to find replacement bodies and minds, he still sad to leave her behind..as he did have feelings for her. My son, an artist and of the same artistic temperament as Josiah once said to me, he cares nothing for having family, kids, the mundane, the regular...all he wants is to draw to create and that this is why he was born...it is everything to him and all he cares about to his core..it is a great gift God has gave him and he must use it (unfortunately a tragic accident took away his dream and it is very sad to me-his mother who knows he wanted to be an artist since age 3 and how exceptionally talented he was--he had won a huge full ride art scholarship and many awards and if not for this tragedy would likely be working on movies or for Disney or something nowadays but I sense that same passion in Josiah). I also saw the immense devastation losing his dreams..his reason for living had on him.. As far as the song, he feels sad that they had vowed to be different ..to not turn out like so many--busted and battered--and they failed and broke their vows to one another.... He is aware that they can eventually forget but the pain is too deep to forgive..he is hurt deeply to see it end this end for them but he feels in her failing to live up to his deepest wants and expectations from her, he cannot love her as he feels, she, too, like all those before her is out to destroy him from his core and essence,but (unintentionally from her part I am sure) destroying his soul in trying to force him to chose between him and his music and big dreams (like the song said also may be in part to her..he is bad news as the music is his true love) so he also recognizes in this song, he has some regrets too...that he failed her in his promises to her as well for being unable to be what she wanted someone who would give up things to be with her and he won't do it.. One sees that she, placed in the unenviable position of many females of playing second fiddle to his quest and his music and dreams eventually felt he did not love her enough and so she left but now he tells her I also leave you as you never really loved me if you do not understand my most important needs...to be there so me no matter what and to support me in my dreams no matter what especially when I feel so few of the others who loves me do this...he fails to see how to few women can play 2nd fiddle to a man's dreams and his music and ambition and sees her fairly normal female reaction (for to girls loves must be proved with actions that she means more to him than anything pretty much although she can support him to a point but not the point she is hurting all the time for his absence and from him putting the music first time and time again (assumed). It is a tragedy essentially as he needs this kind of love so bad and it is so hard to find and she wants what most women wants and can't truly understand him as he is not typical of the average guy..Maybe someday they will both find what they want..he is tempted with women's bodies and words and stuff coming from their minds like any man and so he does not remain celebrate and keeps searching but he on some level knows he disappointed her which he never wanted to hurt her and understands he broke promises to her too but just can't be content with less than he needs. also, I know women and men coming from different places truly don't understand each other..a man must be admired and supported in the pursuit of his most cherished dreams and his work is so important..a women seeks love from a man above all else shown in words and deeds and though her work is also important not to the point usually that it super-cedes giving and receiving love to/from her mate and children...this is needed for her to feel truly fulfilled in many cases if women are honest with themselves. The truth is to a man being admired is everything and to a woman being loved is everything. In a way though I am sure he did not mean it this way, it bespeaks the truth that most men and women can never really get 100% what they need from the other sex and most people can never really met the deepest needs of another person..only God and we ourselves can ultimately do that...and yet we keep hoping...and getting devastated over and over (Hmm another song title ??) Does anyone agree with my take on this? |

hey, thank you paperplains for that..I did post a couple songs that the words were right on. I will later be posting my guesses for the lyrics there and here too I guess and also having a discussion on the meanings of his 20 plus songs over at josiahlemingfans (It is found by goggle- ing it that no spaces an is the one that says index next to it..in that has the word forumlands in the link.) the present and stuff for it is found in the chatter thread..look at the first few threads in the chatter (announcements and stickys) one has word car in where the stuff is and the other the word plan in it and see about our belated birthday surprise for Josiah. Some girl I spoke with- a pathologist --who does autopsies said many of his songs involve death. do they? She said he talked about death and suicide a lot in his songs and that this and 31 pages he does that ...is he talking about suicide and death in this song??? I guess she is referring to his loading his pistol but I didn't really take it that way although that part is a little confusing. What do you think? and thanks for the validation..what do you think of me guess at plaines overhead? |

I think the first half of the first verse he is saying he will not settle for the mundane with any form of peace because someday he will be dead and refuses to be untrue to what he wants that he needs people at his feet and the world he wants totally and completely available to give his his heart's desires and he will do anything to have that even if it hurts people he loves. That he can give so much to so many and thus help make the world better with his music. He may be saying that he was meant to soar and strive and climb to reach his destiny and that nothing can keep him out even though he was not taught or told the kind of life that could be out there for him if if he pursues his dream and goal. The desperation within is too great. the song is song to someone who wants to keep him by her side whether a lover or his mother and he says that though he tears down the relationship by "being selfish" and leaving to seek his fortune he is actually creating not destroying for only if he hurts the person and leaves can he find all that awaits him out there, but that he is sad it hurts the person and if his leaving hurts her and is murder to her soul/being that his thoughts would be consumed with the pain of this and he would curse himself or whatever force gave these songs and this mission to him to rise and be a star. I think maybe the ending is saying once he achieves that which he envisions and longs for that things can then get better for them since he will have what he was so desperate for and if it is to his mom show her he was right in the long run. This is a hard one and maybe this interpretation is wrong but through many of his songs we see this passion and intense need to be what he sees he could be.. He is saying that despite the person (be it a lover or a mother) begging him to pretend is to walk over them to lie and he will not do that cause the truth is even if there are near and close, he can't feel it if he gives up himself and his dream and he feels he must be honest and that he must be who he was destined to be,. for all his years of emotional turmoil, it is nice that this few days after his first concert in LA, Josiah is seeing his long awaited dreams come true..so happy for him Will he need some kind of problem/conflict etc to reach the heihgts this turmoil has caused him to pour out the verses withj the same intensity and passion..time will tell |

I agree..he is saying that in every fiber of his being he is consumed with his music..that it is him to the core..everything he cares about and he can not put it at risk by letting some other interest or love come in. Remembering how he said in an interview that music never lets you down like people or laughs at you, calls you names etc. , he has turned to music to make him happy, console him, get his feelings out, love him etc. That to him putting someone in his life is being unfaithful to his first love, music and hence to himself since it is him..coursing through every vein. He is saying that others tell him he is too obsessed, to possessed that he is wasting his potential and it is a shame for this desire for music and he is replying they don't understand..they don't see how much he feels loved by his music and belief that it will never let him down. He is telling the girl, although she is great, he is warning her that he will hurt her as he is not looking for love as he is already in love with someone else..his songs and music which are and always will be first in his life. He knows his obsession with music and his passion will break a female's heart as he will always put the music first and thus he tries not to get involved. That he himself does not exist if there is no music or if he ever lets something or someone come first. That his music is all he will really ever truly own...that if he must he would sell his very soul. She is saying that he knows women need to feel they are first and he knows in his heart, he can never do that and being the nice guy that he is, he tries to warn them before they fall in love with them. His lyrics are unbelievably..my favorite songs of his are 31 songs, dream reality and one last song. Since we are the recipient of his passion's outcome, his music in all its talent, I am glad he has this passionate love in his life and get let out all his feelings and beliefs in his songs and that we can hear them. ' This man is a true artist as my son is (drawing wise) who used to tell me he doesn't care if he ever gets married or has kids..that the focus of his life is art and that is the reason why he was born..that God blessed him with talent and this is why he exists. I suspect that Josiah like my son is very girted intellectually and creativity wise It seems that is how Josiah feels and these types of people live life on a different plane..their art is all consuming. |

if Josiah ever reads my interpretations and I am wrong, I hope he won't hold that against me..as I am a huge fan..in fact, he helped me today. I had to lie perfectly still in a pet scan for 30 minutes to see if I have lung cancer or not..I am so scared when I woke up and then I got in the machine and I immediately started itching everywhere and it was hard to not move a muscle and time crawled by so uncomfortably I was so stressed out until I started singing his songs in my head and trying to remember the lyrics and it got me through this difficult half hour quicker. so thank you, Josiah, for your lovely songs and sharing your immense talent with us all. |

I think the I'm holding on your rope got me ten feet off the ground refers to the connection/tie between them and that first when it was good, he felt ten high off the ground in happiness..walking on air..head over heels in love..up in the clouds so to speak..very up. By the end of the song/relationship the same tie (rope) to this girl is now referring to literally to her connection to him being ten feet off the air committing suicide. First the love burned red hot and intense, now it is the same intensity but full of sorrow turned blue. Symbolizing the depression over her but also the cold fact that he is turning blue due to death. He needs her like a heart needs a beat and without her, his heart stops beating (by his own hand). She has happened upon his now dead body but his spirit is still there and sees and hears her reaction.. Her reaction to finding him dead and realizing what she has done and what it lead him too has her apologizing and saying I'm so sorry forgive me etc repeatedly and he is hearing what she is saying now, but he can't make a sound (respond) as he is dead now. As his spirit hears her apologizing and professing her love which is now too late, he says she apologizes (now in death) the way an angel would..so sweetly..like the person he once thought she was when he fell in love with her. He is saying he is afraid that, regardless of if it is sincere or not, it is still too late. She tells him so needs him now in retrospect, but too late, of course, and then she desperately cut the rope down hoping to revive him. He mentions how she never expected this and thought an I'm sorry would suffice like it had in the past when he took her back but this time, he killed himself first and it is too late for her to say I am sorry now. I think he is saying if he could now he would take another shot with her but it is, unfortunately, too late as he is dead and can't return to see if she now finally means what she is saying. I do believe it is about a man who killed himself over what she did to him as there are too many references to being dead...hearing but can't respond, turning blue, cut me down, and even though her apology is perfect it does no good as it came too late and the rope hanging ten feet off the ground. |

The cigar song these objects are things he likes and others either don't understand the extent of that passion or that they disdain him doing. The cigar represents yet another conflict and wound between son and mother..she worries and his smoking wounds her heart. It is a symbol of one of many things they have different points of view on that wound him deeply but he keeps it hidden yet others somehow always seem to know all about his things and demons he keeps to keep private. . That he is made to feel guilty and silly for having big dreams and his determination to take HIS path in life instead of what his elders want is treated like treason and makes him feel bad, but he is saying..I don't care..I will not let them stop me cause I am grown now...and will do what I want..I am a man now and will make my own decisions. Yeah, I dropped out and I am currently a nobody but I will be someone someday. Besides. it's just a cigar not cigarettes or alcohol or drugs..put it in perspective..I'm not that bad in fact, I am a winner and I will be more than you imagine someday. Next verse..the guitar is the vehicle for all the music inside him..that the passion of these melody and verses are so strong they burn his very heart. that none of them know how intensely it courses within him.. they don't know that he nearly drowning in a sea of bliss gobbling up joy of making music,..floating on air and he will sink or swim career wise but he will not leave the ocean..it is there he will remain sink or swim.. Next verse..that he won't usually let those close to him know what he is thinking and feeling much, but that he still needs and wants desperately their support of his dream...he may at times relent and agree not to smoke (breathe it in)or play his music (strum a chord) and appease her but it wounds him to the core that no one understands how desperately he needs to pursue his dream and live his life as he sees fit...but being a man he will pursue his dreams and no one can tell him what to do whether they support him or not.. I am not sure if this interpretation is right but someday I hope Josiah comes on here or somewhere and explains in detail all of his songs as they are deep and fascinating. It seems to me in many of his songs and from this that he can't tell them much directly but he pours all his inner emotions into his songs and it is there if they chose to see it not put there for their benefit but because he must get it out of him and his music is how he does this. It also seems like some of his songs are expressing his feelings about the conflict between what he wants --pursuing a musical career and what the family wants--stay there, go to school, get a job, do the right" thing and so forth. I get the impression he is lectured a lot but being a female and a mom, I can identify with his mom/families normal reaction to all this. Reflecting on his songs has made me realize me and my views aren't always right and my fear of taking risks and how it has hindered me and how I think is not the only path in life and I shouldn't expect others to see things as I do including my family members..it also makes me wander what things I might have done differently if I could see things from an even broader prospective than only what I am seeing and believe in myself more like Josiah did. At the same time, I am reminded every day is a new beginning and chance to do what you really want to do or at least be happier. |

I think what it means is he was kind of playing a game at love..telling her what she wanted to hear, buying her things, making her happy, promising her a beautiful future and he thought this would keep her hooked and where he wanted her..he thought she would always be there for him when he wanted cause he tried so hard to hard to do the love game in the way to win what he wanted from her, in a way that seemed great on the surface and in words but she saw deeper that it was a sham in regards to that which he did..his actions, in fact, he just took her for granted getting to the point he didn't show up much, didn't explain why or try to make it up to her..just assuming he had done enough before to keep her there. He stopped trying so hard but still did not expect her to ever leave him. But when she decided she was not going to put up with that kind of treatment and said to break it off, it was so unexpected that it drive him nuts. What he had taken for granted now became what he wanted more than anything. He obsesses over the whole thing now replaying and rethinking it all over and over in minute detail, where he went wrong, how it hurt for her to say goodbye to him, all the good times they had had which he threw away..over an over it is all he can think about when before he couldn't give her the time of day ignoring her for long stretches. His whole insides are in an uproar and nothing seems right. The last few lines are the hardest to know..it may mean he decides to kill himself or maybe that he will never get into a relationship again and flee and avoid relationships for something less painful like throwing himself into some endeavor or job or something or that this has changed him forever and she isn't as important now as is the deep change that he underwent as a result of what happened and his role in it and lessons from it..but basically he will never be the same whether he runs away through death or through closing himself off or drinking or whatever...he is now changed. But he must escape and run..it's kind of like first he ran from her and now he must run from himself but the re is nowhere to run to get away from himself and what he has done. |

(chorus verse 2 (4 and 6) His friends understand though and tell him he truly has it and genuine talent and he will really be big someday, and now he is beginning to believe it. that he'll get out of the town he hates that cramps and constrains him. He is, naturally, listening more to his friends as teens do and since they reinforce what he secretly hopes for and believes. (verse 3) he is saying That IF they are right, in their advice that he wait and (do the standard first--college, job, family) before making it it on his terms or if they are right in their advise that he can't make it on his term (too risky., dangerous, and scary from his folks pov, that he MUST see the proof of it or don't lecture him, that he know is his heart he will be MUCH more than they ever imagine for him..he know to his core that something awaits him out there..if he waits for his mom's hopes that he will outgrow this wonderlust and huge (maybe he will be dissapointed) dream wrapped in her fears and worries and desire to protect him, that he will be giving up what he knows in his soul and to the core of his being that he will be and must be. Essentially prove it or stop bugging me. (verse five) After the earlier verses he then turns from angst, anger, and sadness to tender concern and reassurance to his mom I think maybe the next verse is to his mother now growing softer to her motherly concerns for him and worries if he strikes out and leaves the standard path for the cold world and seeking his dream and forortunes thst no he won't let it harm his soul and change who he is, they will try but he will be true to who he is and what he has learned. since his mom has suffered for several years with cancer, there is probably a lot of sadness and why us god but life is passing by while we do this and eventually we will see it is in vain to worry about tomorrow and let today seek by and lose its joys. We must carrry on to our paths and life despite death knocking at the door. I had read somewhere someone thought the song was about death, but I think my interpretation may be closer to it..so many of his songs are deep ad difficult to understand and fascinating to try to figure out. Knowing his personal history somewhat helps a lot. |

they say, nothing comes from going against their grain and oh, we are the diggers of our own graves and we will crash and burn before our train leaves this town this could mean to that no use trying to do things differently from those before them cause you are just killing yourself for nothing (figuratively) and your dreams of a better tomorrow or the world will all come crashing down on you before you barely began your life's journey he could also be referring in the whole song to something more simple..his desires to leave his town and follow his dreams instead of the status quo life those around him (parents/grandparents) want him to have instead (school/job/marriage/grow old) and him saying I am not doing it your way. |

they say, history will find us on the last train and we'll make all the same mistakes that they made and we could never rule tomorrow our way out love...it's too late now they say, nothing comes from going against their grain and oh, we are the diggers of our own graves and we will crash and burn before our train leaves this town love...forgive me now they can burn in hell they can burn in hell they say, we will live life dragging on the coattails holding onto dreams of false fairy tales and sleeping under bridges where our train breaks down love...our light will drown they can burn in hell they can burn in hell INTERPRETATION It is a song about rebellion and difference between the older and the younger generation..when he says the first "they" say, he is referring to all the older generation around them (the younger generation..his and his friends) when he says history will find us on the last train, it means when they get to the end of their lives and history looks back on that life, that "they" say that they will make all the same mistakes that those before them did..that it is too late to think things could ever change and going against the status quo is in vain. That our actions will lead us all to the the fruitless end and decline of a world in chaos. that it is too late to change the path we are on according to the older people .that trying to follow our new ways and acting on our divergent hopes and dreams and actions that are different from the previous generation/s and could lead to a different path in the world is in vain and just keep going along the path "they" set,,don't go against the crowd and what we have established as the right way. that it will just lead to failure before we barely have begun. That people are telling them (the next generation) that they will come to the end of their days eventually walking the same old paths and built on the same old ways (dragging on the coattails of those before them following the path set by the older generation ).."they" say people are destined to destroy themselves (world wise). Although dreams of false fairy tales not could be talking about religion..that those before them believed in..or just a status quo type happiness of the tried and true (but boring) path, but it more likely referring to the younger generations false fairy tales and notions of a dream of actually having a world of peace and brotherhood.. "he is saying that "they" say that all their (the younguns) passions and things will burn out and they will just wind up like everyone else and their noble dreams and light will drown when they get older and the passion and hopes of youth are squashed and he is saying a loud FU to all this he is being told by saying you can all go to hell cause I am not believing this and never will. |
